I bought this item, but it didn't reflect any beholder rays. The rays never hurt the character holding the item, but the shield just appeared to stop the rays, never reflect them.

Any way to fix this item?

TIA

That's the ToB version. If you play without ToB installed, the Shield bounces the rays right back at the Beholders. But everybody complained about the stupidity of killing an entire lair of Beholders just by walking into the room, so in ToB the Shield is softened to merely absorb the rays, not reflect them. And it's still ridiculously overpowered.

I thought the problem occured when the Shield of Balduran was carried by a character also wearing the Cloak of Mirroring.

... Sorry if this is wrong, it's been a long time since I've played.

My shield reflects the rays and I have ToB installed.

Cloak of mirroring would in the original also reflect the rays, no need to have the sheild as well.

Think its from one of the bonus merchants originally packaged with the deluxe edition. However you can download them now if you have the vanilla edition.

On the other hand, I find Beholder's Rays to be cheesy and way overpowered. My lvl 20 fighter can beat everything in the game singlehandedly, except beholders cause they cause way too much damage every round. Not to mention when they're in groups...(Gauths, Í'm specifically looking at you)

(blasted lightning and cause severe wounds)

:beats self upside the head:

The statement I posted previously would be absolutely correct if you scratched out the words "Shield of Balduran" and wrote in "Cloak of Mirroring" in their place. See, the two items are so cheesy and so similar that it's (evidently) easy for me to get them mixed up. My bad.

So, sorry, I don't know of any Shield-nerfing-via-installing-ToB, but maybe some mod changes it--I know there are plenty of people out there who have views similar to mine regarding the Shield. It's possible that your "Deflection instead of Turning" is due to wearing the Shield and the Cloak at the same time (provided you equipped the Shield first), but that's unlikely, as the Cloak renders the Shield pretty much entirely obsolete. (And even if it did come about, it wouldn't permanently change the Shield.)

My opinion on the nerfed Shield: Who cares? Beholderkin still stand a 0% chance of surviving anyway, so why complain?
