i seem to be in a serial restarting phase and the latest is a solo monk which i've toyed with for a while

he's pretty good so far - i've got tactics installed and didn't see a way past illyich and co so i left the dungeon early - i'm spending a lot of time sneaking around slingshotting people (sling of seeking is going to help now i've got it) - i'm level 9 now and have my shiny +1 fists so that's good - he already seems strong in melee against weak enemies (if you see what i mean) but can't stand up against anything tough

i'm mainly saving up for the scarlet ninja-to at the moment

can i wear the amulet of power do you know? i might make an important decision based on that . . .

If you want some scoop on a solo monk I advise you to read up my whom I took to BG2 afterwards.
A solo monk is a tough challenge on the low levels, but as soon as you get magic resistance (lvl-14) he becomes all to powerful and this is where the fun stops. When killing Demogorgon took me 3 seconds I finally broke off the experiment, so be wary

I'm running a 3 person party with a Monk. It's part of my "quasi solo experiment" where I pick a romance character, create a PC that him / her would like (RP wise), and run the game while RPing as much as possible.

I'm about to update that thread right now...

he's a good character - i'm liking him a lot

i'm only level 9 still as i started at the ToTSC XP Cap and he can't stand up fight with groups of anything other than the easiest (massed scrapping with the slaver guards after the sewers killed him super quick even with a bit of buffing - i ended up luring them back into the cloudkill trap which was nice

i've searched for the level drain thing and looks like baldurdash has removed all my options there so that's one challenge at least unless i go scrolls - i'm toying with siding with bodhi for the first time but i can't see it with this guy . . .

Forget the scarlet sword and the sling. All a monk needs are his fists. Use them exclusively. This is the point of monks, hand-to-hand combat.

Remember that a monk can outpace his enemies and can stealth. These abilities helped me a lot in the early game.

Stunning multiple enemies with one stunning blow then laying into them, and repeating the stunning when they look like moving was one of my favourites. You can get some of a group out of the way and make it easier to deal with the rest.

A solo Monk is absolutely screwed when it comes to Negative Plane Protection. I don't even know of any mod items that could help you.

If you have problem whit the fighting in the beginning of the game whit a monk. Then take some easy questes that you don't have to fight hard battles, and get some easy experience.I think you can use Amulet of power Atleast i used it on my monk when i soloed.Or just go buy a protection of unded scroll. Monks are one of the best characters to solo whit when they are high level.

thanks for the interest folks

i've done slavers and some other minor alkathla quests, trademeet, collected the cloak of the sewers, the d'arnise keep ring & the green ioun stone and started the main thieves tasks - i'm level 13 (quivering palm so far only used on the trademeet genies) waiting for that level 14 magic resistance bonanza

it's hack-and-slash but it's good hack-and slash

buffed with DUHM i can toe-to-toe with groups of trolls although they seem to be immune to stunning blow

i haven't done a detailed definitive comparison but the scarlet ninja-to still has a role to play against some enemies - two attacks per round isn't much less than my fists rate and the poison damage (and poison 'stutter') can stop people dead

ilbathra (sp?) for mirror image has been very useful

'horror' is a very useful innate ability

had my first group vampire fight last night - i was level-drained to death in no time flat . . . i guess higher level tactics or (less pleasingly) scrolls of PfU will be needed - it's occurred to me that when i get whirlwinds i'll be able to apply them to things like the sling of seeking with +2 bullets giving me 100-plus-odd hit points of ranged damage in a round - that could help

i'm scared of the tactics demons though - can you get scrolls of protection from evil?
