This journal bug is driving me crazy, do you guys write down things so you don't forget tasks that have to be accomplished?
Also, I was just playing a little bit ago and I was unable to rest or save the game. It was very frustrating because I wanted to stop playing and I hadn't saved in a a while. Does anybody know why there are points in the game when you can't save or rest? I wasn't in a 'dangerous' situation, I was in a few different inns and just walking around the towns. Also, the big one, how on earth do I leave Akthala (sp?) to go to the Ulam Hills or Windspear or other places outside the city? I've gone to all the areas of the city excpecting to find some transport to the 'outside' world but I can't. Any help on these 3 things would be greatly appreciated!!! thanks newbie adam ps I'm thoroughly enjoying this game! |

Hi Adamo
Welcome to Ironworks You can not save if there are hostile creatures in the area or your party is scattered. To leave Akthala you need to go to the City Gates and leave through the exit there. Hope this helps! [ 11-12-2004, 12:24 AM: Message edited by: T-D-C ]

I'm not aware of any commonly-reported 'Journal bug,' could you describe what you think is wrong? Usually, the game keeps track of the quests pretty well--when you hear about something that needs doing, it appears in the "Quests" section of your Journal, and when you finish it, it gets moved to your "Done Quests" section. The "User" section is good for writing notes to yourself, like where you've stashed some Potions and Scrolls and maybe a few Keys.
Some areas do indeed have some non-detectable hostile creatures in them--don't worry, they won't attack you, they're just there to give the place a hostile atmosphere. But you say that you find yourself unable to Rest in any area--now that is a well-known bug, and though I've never had it myself, I hear that it usually happens to people who haven't installed the Official Patch and the BaldurDash Fixpack (see the FAQ thread for links). For now, just travel from one map area to another, and rely on your AutoSave until you get your game patched. If you want to access out-of-town areas, you have to leave the City Gates map through the gates themselves, and the path is rather invisible because it's under an archway. Annoying, I know. Sorry.

One note about the Journal thing - if you move onto the next Chapter in the game, you need to flick back to the previous Chapter in your journal to view those quests. Like, any quests accepted before paying the fee to Gaelan Bayle/Bodhi will be back a page in your Journal.

Perhaps this is a bug in my game (patched and all), but there are a few quests (Umar Hills and a Mage Imprisoned come to mind) which will create brand new open-quest entries if you talk to the person who gave you the quest, after the quest is already completed.

Adamo, I actually write down things at the journal, it helps keep track of some quests you have done and some minor reminds regarding items or people that I had to talk with.
The Journal keeps track of your past quests and all, but once you start to figure out some stuff around the game it's nice to write it down at your journal so you will know what you have done. Actually, I rather do it when I'm drinking and playing.. once I started a game and drank a few beers while playing it, the next time i reloaded that save-game I was already in the final part of the game.. glad I wrote down a few notes at the journal explaining it to myself, hehe. cheers.

As far as the journal goes, for instance, I was given the 'subquest' to track down Ployer to remove Jaheira's curse and there was no mention of it in the journal; it seems that only the 'major' quests are mentioned in the journal. Apparently, from what you've told me I should be making notes of it myself in the 'user' area of the jpurnal. That's not a problem to do, I just expected it to happen automatically as it does in games like Diablo, etc.
I've got to go back to the city gates one more time. I couldn't find the exact place I had to go in order to move out of Akthala. Also, the inability to rest and/or save the game was very frustrating. I played for about 45 without saving and then when I wanted to, I couldn't. So, finally, I had to exit the game and lose all that I'd done in that time. I know about the 'hostile' environment thing. At one point I was in the copper coronet and I couldn't get a room to rest and I couldn't save---very strange. Tell me about the Baldurdash Fixpack. Will I lose saved games if I install it? Actually, let me throw one more newb question in here. Why would a mage fail at attempting to write a spell into his/her spellbook? I've found some scrolls that my mage has had the option to 'Write Magic' but when I try it I get the message that it failed. By the way, you guys have been great! Thanks for all the help. My only other problem is that I've been staying up well past 2:00 am to play this game. It's dragged me in and I can't stop. It's been a blast! thanks again adam |

There are multiple parts of the journal... Are you sure you're looking in the Quests section? The major/chapter plotpoints are listed in a different section than the subquests.

The city gates are a pain. As Six said, they're hidden under the arch at the east of the screen. Move your mouse in-between the guards on either side of the road and the cursor should change - click when that happens and you're on your way.
The Baldurdash fixpack won't do anything to your savegames and I would highly recommend you install it as it fixes a ton of bugs. Your mage is failing to write spells because his intelligence isn't high enough to give him a 100% chance of success. Your problem is easily sorted by saving up a few scrolls, drinking a potion of genius / mind focusing (to temporarily raise intelligence) and then learning them all in one go.
