(spoilers?) Cult of Eyeless quest Rod Disappears when joined?

I've searched and searched on this topic but can't tell if this is a bug. I've tried it twice, my thief sneaks over to the gauth guarding the 2nd part, some text floats over my main characters head and says something to the effect that I should Equip it as soon as possible and goes on about how greedy and evil it makes me feel. BUT THE ROD IS NOT IN MY INVENTORY! Both pieces are gone, its not on my assasin or my character. I have TDD installed and newest patches and Baldurdash.

I just want the XP for returning it. I've killed the Eyeless one twice with large casualties...working on new strategy but would like the rod too. If I save and Shadowkeep it in will that work? But I probably can't save after activating it.

You can't use the Rod, if you take it outside, it kills you. Also, have you killed the Unseeing Eye before you get the rod? Did you kill him? And TDD is known to cause many bugs...

From what i can rem, when you get the 2nd part of the rod from the beholders lair(the first part from the avatar guy), the 2 parts merge to form a single one. Then bigeye appears and you can use it against him once from the quickslot, he wun die but will be badly wounded. Then take him out. The rod should still be around, but the text should say "has been used" or something to that effect. I dont know if TDD is buggy on this. Jus shadowkeep but try to find the correct version of the rod as well.

My impression was I would be able to use it once but it wasn't even there. Just to try it, I found it in Shadowkeeper (Rift Device) and it was the spent version so I was unable to use it against the Eyeless guy. But at least I got the XP for returning it and found a good strat on that Beholder and his death spell.

Anyway, I was a little disappointed when I went back around and confronted Gaal. It just said Gaal "Death" with no XP after I killed him. Maybe because he had morale failure? His little helpers were like 2200 a piece. This is only my second time through and I'm finding a lot of things that I missed before and this was one of them.

Hmmm. I wish I could help, but it does indeed sound like this is a TDD problem, and the TDD forums shut down long ago--along with all their bug-reporting and bugfixing. So, essentially, if you've got a new bug that isn't already well-known, and you also have TDD installed, pretty much all we can do is sigh and say, "Ah, TDD. Sorry 'bout your luck."
