To backstab some one you need to fistly be in the shadows, secondly you need a weapon that you can backstab with. Thirdly you need to be behind the person to backstab them.

you cannot be in their direct field of vision and you have to make a succesful attack with in a round.
if you are a fighter/thief or fighter/mage/thief you may be using a weapon that you cannot backstab with. only weapons usable by the single class theif are allowed to backstab. basically, unless you're using a single handed bladed weapon (including the katana) or a club or a quarterstaff, you won't be able to backstab.

Do what T-D-C says (remember that not every weapon is suitable for backstabbing). You will leave shadows, but provided that you followed the rules, you'll backstab as you're doing so. You will know that you were successful if you get a message about a backstab multiplier in the damage you caused. Sometimes (often, early in the game), you will miss but that doesn't mean you didn't do it right.
Afterward, run. Finally, some creatures can't be backstabbed (especially if they don't have a back). [ 08-05-2004, 05:32 PM: Message edited by: Feral ]

You don't necessarily need to run...you could just drink a potion of invisibility if the creature is still alive.

I should have put a smilie next to that line. Lord is right. You can also use a ring of invisibility, etc. The point is that you're best off trying to make yourself scarce as soon as possible, if your victim lives. Unfortunately, BG's combat system does not take into account grievous injury. A nearly dead enemy can fight just as well as an uninjured one (perhaps not as long, though).

I think I see AF's problem.
Even though the game says "Leaving Shadows" it's not an instant thing. You're not doing anything wrong. Make sure you're standing behind the enemy and let it say "Leaving Shadows." Don't worry about it. Stand there until you see the attack roll.

yeah, you have around 2 rounds to do something after you have stopped hiding in shadows purposefully by changing a weapon or doing anything other than hiding in shadows or walking really. If you fail to hide in shadows, you have much lesstime. Usually around half a round or so until you become visible. Very nasty up against imp illyich when you fail.

Swashbuckler is effective as Fighter, Assasain as backstabber and scout, Bounty Hunter sucks the most. |
