I have gone through quite a bit of the game and I can't for some reason select Windswept Hills as a travel destination even though it appears on my strategic map.
Is there someone beside "Lord Firekraag" that I need to talk to before I can go there? I want to get rid of these acorns...

But even then I wouldn't recommened doing it until after you have done some of the other quests. It is, in my estimation, the hardest dungeon in the first three chapters.

Strange that....
 Everytime you get a new place on your map you will need to exit the city through the gates to access it. Goes for Nalia's Keep, Trademeet, Umar Hills etc Hope this helps

I reckon the Helm quest you get in chapter 2 is the hardest. Its also tiring on the feet, all backtracking and that
