Level 9 - it means that in BG1 and ToSC you cant cast any spells - BG2 only.

That's correct. Paladins get Cleric spells at Lev. 9, and Rangers start getting Druid spells at Level 8. Fighter-types can reach Level 8 with ToSC, but due to what's probably an oversight, Rangers still can't cast any spells yet--gotta wait for BG2.

To me, the only truly useful aspect of choosing a Paladin over a fighter was the lay on hands ability. I'm not sure if it's worth the slowed level progression, but I did enjoy the RP aspects.

In SoA you can get priest spells. RANGERS CAN actually get 1 spell in ToTSC. But in SoA, the paladin gets more spells than the ranger, and gets lvl4 spells, while the rangers get level 3. But paladins really rock. Awesome saves, detect evil, turn undead. Its hard to make a good paladin, but they rock, and thats that.

Paladins do sort-of get the short end of the stick in BG1--compared to Fighters, anyway. But just wait until you hit BG2: You'll finally be casting Healing spells, and you get to choose the Cavalier kit. Boo ya!

As for Rangers getting spells in ToSC, I took Kivan and Minsc to Level 8 last game, and yes, they each got a slot to memorize 1 spell. But they didn't KNOW any spells to memorize! Will this happen if I build a PC Ranger?

But you CAN roll a really good Paladin, since the minimums are so high. I got lucky and scored these numbers on about the 4th Reroll last night: 178)/18/18/9/17/18.
Imagine what she'll be like after I Tome her up.

I myself have never played a Paladin, but my original Lavindathar was a fighter. He was exceptionally good, and a great leader of the group. Also, superb close combat, no weapon restrictions and armour restrictions, also great strength in my opinion make the fighter the best to be.

I'd recomend a fighter to all you out there considering a new character....

Fighters are boring. You get your sword, shield, and that's it. All the way to ToB. They don't have any other skills except fighting, get no spells, and by the time you get past 10th level, all you get is three hit points per three hundred thousand experience points. Dull. Very dull.

I suggest a thief, later dualed to a mage. Pick pockets, hide in shadows, move silently, set traps, open locks, find/remove traps, detect illusion, backstab, plus a whole arsenal of spells.... need I say more?
