... If you, *you* in real life, were asked the 'button' question by the djinni in Irenicus' dungeon?
Mid-game spoiler - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Keep in mind that he could be referring to Imoen or Sarevok (let's forget any others for the minute). Personally, I do not think it is about cowardice and bravery - it is about trust. So, I would not press the button. Why? A) IF IT IS IMOEN: She has a good heart and would probably be willing to sacrifice herself for us. That leaves us free to avenge her and kill the wizard. B) IF IT IS SAREVOK: Being as we wants to become the god of murder, his only chance of survival is to not press the button. Me doing the same would result in his death. Well, considering Sarevok is dead, the djinni is probably referring to Imoen. So, Would you press the button? [ 04-01-2004, 03:11 PM: Message edited by: Jaradu ] |

Considering the fact that I know that ever since BG1, every Temple on the planet offers the service of Raise Dead, I would press the button.

Yes. I press the button.
This riddle is very old, is it not? It's not always your sibling specified in the riddle, though. It's sort of a given that the one you are to save is someone you love. Then I press the button. Remember, that your "Imoen has a good heart" argument doesn't really hold water. There's no way to communicate. It's a mind game. You might think, "Imoen will assume that I'm pressing the button, so she won't. But then she won't want to live with that so she'll press it. So I won't." and all sorts of second-guessing yourself. For me, it's easy. Would I be able to live with sacrificing someone I love for my own life? No. Would I really want to live with that kind of loss AND being responsible for their death? No. Do I even KNOW what they're going to do? No. Therefore, I press the button. If they live, great. If not, then we will be together in death.

This riddle is like Game Theory and is used in Economics especialy in Oligopolies where they colludude with eachother. The Nash Equilibrium for this problem is, I think, to press the button.

Ah Jorsh, your wisdom in this matter far excedes my own. Though it is quite a "paradox" isnt it, how can on gain by dying? As the saying goes, you can't take it with you. But this question has nothing to do with economics but rather a person's nobility as the genie says. And I'm sure everyone here desires to appear noble in front of their peers. I am no exception so my answer's yes. It is up to you however, to decide if i have the conviction for my words.
I hope i used all the words right.

It leaves very little open to argument. I'm sure we all read it, but what could we possibly say in reply?

I would most likely sit down, grab a dwarven grog to sip and bide my time.
