Improved haste

Okay so Anomen usually wears the ring of free action. However for big battles, I like to give him improved haste, so he takes off the ring before I cast it. But the spell never works on him. Normal haste however, does. This is particularly frustrating because I can cast improved haste on Keldorn, who wears his free action armour all the time, including when I cast the spell on him. Anomen has no magic resistance either, so that can't be the reason. What's going on?

Is he wearing the cloak of mirroring? Boots of speed should make no difference. What type of armor is he wearing (body armor, other ring, amulet, boots, head gear, etc)?

Well he's had various armours recently - gorgon plate, red dragon armour, doomplate, drow plate, through all of which he hasn't been able to haste. He's not wearing the cloak of mirroring. He has the cloak of the sewers, ring of the ram, girdle of piercing, dragon helm. He's using the flail of ages and the shield of harmony.

I can't cast normal haste on him when he's wearing the ring - which is as it should be. However when he takes it off, normal haste works, but improved haste still doesn't.

Sounds buggy... are you fully patched (Official Patch and Baldurdash)? Any mods?

Have you tried removing each piece of equipment & casting Improved Haste to see which one may be causing it? Doesn't the Flail give Free Action (or is that only once you've upgraded it in ToB)? The Shield of Harmony makes you immune to Hold Person - it's worth trying to caste Improved Haste while not using it, just to see if that's it.

Doesn't the Shield of Harmony protect against movement spells? Or is it only Hold Person ('cause it deals w/the mind)?

It's hold person, although there's a small possibility that that might be your problem.

Yes, it is only hold person, and it doesn't have a free action symbol when equipped. Of course normal haste works when I have the shield equipped so I don't know if that's the problem... I'll check though. I have the official patch and no mods.

That's an odd one. Can't say I use the improved haste spell much. Nothing to do with alignment clashes or something? No idea here, but it sounds buggy.

Funny thing about haste and improved haste - imagine how old our PC's would be if the old goldbox AD&D rule about haste ageing party members upon each use, was kept in place!

I wonder if there should be a withdrawal clinic for haggard fatigued veterans who've abused the ol' potions of speed like the artist did from Bg1.
