Okay, I'm starting to get bored with my other games, so I'm coming back to BG2. My idea is that you can't buff before a battle, only once an enemy is sighted on your screen. Yes, this will probably mean quite a few Mage deaths, but it'll make it interesting. The reason for this is because although the battles are still slightly challenging, they lack any real challenge once you get to the Improved Haste stage of the game. This will hopefully add in a new tactical environment to the game.

Is this actually feasible?

Oh yeah, that's actually how I play through most of the battles, but as Dundee stated that is without Tactics and other "battle enhancers". The only time I allow myself to "pre-buff" is in those instances where I am forwarned about an enemy being present. It is especially difficult in Beholder/Illithid territory, but encourages you to have buff potions handy (which would be the case in PnP; since you have no idea what the DM has around the next corner, you make sure to tell him/her that you have your most versatile items handy).

Does that "no buffing" include Stoneskin ? That's a good challenge.

It would depend on what class you'll take. Summons can take up a hefty amount of damage, as well as the fact that spells such as Mislead aren't really buff-spells.

Okay, what I meant was a character fresh from resting. As in, no buffs whatsoever. Not even Stoneskin/Mislead. Not even summons. Once you see an enemy, sure, throw in everything, but if there isn't an enemy, then you can't cast a spell that affects you in combat.

Well, I was thinking of doing it with Tactics/Ascension installed...

Tactics was designed with pre-buffing in mind, and extreme usage of cheese. If you succeed in winning Tactics without pre-buffing, well... more power to you I guess, but I do not recall any such success at the moment.

The default installation in comparison, was designed more for storyflow. You could use a bloody chicken (and in fact somebody did) to complete the game (not solo of course).
