I'm sure this has already been a thread and if so could someone direct me to it, but in the meanwhile....

WTF!!!!! I'm playing a kensai with minsc, jaheira, anomen, aerie, and imoen in my party. have juiced everyone up the wazoo with spells and potions, and still am not able to win against the mind flayers. I'm stuck in their little place, already know where the exit is but I want to actually finish the map first. could someone please offer me some strategy???

--do a search on the SoA forum for "mind flayer" or "illithid"
--you can protect against the stun with high magic resistance, and protect against the critical hit brain drain with a low AC (sure about the former, not too sure on the latter)
--stun protection: Chaotic Commands (priest spell, long duration), Potion of Clarity (short duration), Potion of Magic Blocking (short duration) Potion of Magic Shielding (ups magic resistance)
--SoA brain drain "protection" means Potions of Genius and Mind Focusing, those wonderful healing potions of the mind

EDIT: strategy - send in one buffed tank to keep the mind flayers busy while your other party members attack with ranged weapons or have other characters with long-reaching melee weapons (quarterstaves, halberds, two-handed swords, etc.) stand right behind the tank so their weapons can smack the mind munchers without getting hurt.

If you're in Chapter 5, you have to clear the map in order to get back out. And be fast when making certain decisions.

well though there are enought flayer threads out there here are some tactics
for easy/cheesy FlayerSlayers

lure them out of their room and into yours one by one (run away and close the door behind the first that comes in)
Attack with ranged weapons while one of your chars is running in circles away from the Flayer who is attacking him.
Use all brute force you have on one Flayer to make him go down before he starts brain sucking.
Immediately Remove Paralysis if someone gets stunned (else => brain suck => dead)
backstab with thief can get you a normal flayer in one hit!
Do NOT try to use magic on them as they have HIGH resistance but use magic to buff your party - chaotic commands, haste, bless, chant, ...
After a MF fight take a break and wait for the braindrain to wear off. Go to the fridge and get yourself a soda or do anything of the like. Remember that energy drain and intelligence drain wear off after a few rounds, only level drain lasts until dispelled.

NOW for the mega cheese:

pre tactics mod MFs are stupid so the classic cheese is to have an invisible char standing in the door while you attack with ranged weapons.

mordies are also nice diversions. mind flayers cant hurt them(not sure about tactics mod MF's). pit fiends are also pretty good, since they dont get stunned as often as the summons do(excluding mordies). death spell also sometimes a MF or two, and all the umber hulks.

Animate dead. Skeletons are immune to psionics. Use them to draw melee attacks. Hasted skeleton warriors are even better.

how can you beat the mind flayers?well for me its totally easy.soooo simple:

cast: chaotic command and death ward on yer best fighter and let him beat the suckers!

mind flayers dont have good thaco, and the spell duration for chaotic command and death ward is long enough.my viconia casts those spell on korgan, and...you have dead flayers laying around!u wont be dissapointed

Yeah, MF are mean...so brain suck is the thing that kills instantly...I was wondering what on earth that was. I sent Minsc in (this is in the Asylum, the Illithid painting) to keep it at bay while I prepared my party. The flayer stuns him, hits him once, and Minsc is on the floor! Whoops! I killed it eventually with summons...three leopards and two bears...they ripped the bugger apart!

Maybe he wasn't of a high enough level or perhaps he didn't have that spell in a mages spell book . Also it's a bit of a waste summoning a Mordenkains sword for one little mind flayer, six maybe, but one? Next time Slicer15 cast chaotic commands on Minsc this will make him imune to the stun then hack away, although Minsc isn't a very good Mind Flayer fighter because of his low intelligence .
