Okay, so we know about the Axes; The plus side being that you can max out your skill in both a melee weapon and a ranged weapon at the same time, and the downside being that (this is where newbies should stop reading) the best axe and the best throwing axe are only +2 [as opposed to the +3s on three other melee weapons in the game], AND you don't find those axes until WAAAAAAAAAY late in the game. We might even know that, even though both of those axes fall under the Axe proficiency, your THAC0 for the Throwing Axe depends on your DEX, not STR. (Intuitive, really, but sometimes you can never be sure.) But those aren't my questions.
When you Identify the Axe+2 and Throwing Axe+2, you get to read their stories and stats. About their stats: They state that the weapon does +2 Damage, but it does NOT list a THAC0 bonus on either one. Did BioWare FORGET to state their improved THAC0? And what were the odds of that happening twice? Will someone near the end of the game please slap one of these axes on somebody and tell me if there's a THAC0 difference? I forgot to do it last time I was there. Thanks. ------------------ You know what I always say? "Always kill the mouthy one," that's what I always say. Hey! Why are you stabbing me??? |

Interesting question. I don't know Six'. The reason behind that is that apart from Kagain, there aren't too many characters that use axes. Except if you make your main character that way.
I don't remeber a difference in THACO when if used the Axe +2, but then I wasn't looking and might of just presumed as such. If I can find out, I'll let you know. BTW, is this out of curiosity, or are you running a character that would relly like to know? ------------------ Making running away an art form |

Im not sure, i havent checked it carefully but if i remember correctly, magical axes dont have thaco bonuses, they made it that way in BG2 too (at least in the couple of axes from BG2 that i remember, coz i thought it was weird too).

If that's true, and magical axes don't get THAC0, I think it's time for a rousing cheer of "How flippin' pathetic!" I'd rather use Tweezers+1 than a Battleaxe+9 if the axe doesn't give me THAC0. Who the hell thought THAT one up?

I've just been over to GameBanshee to look at their equipment list for BG, and apart from a couple of axes, most get a THACO bonus. Of course they only list five, so that leaves three - though one was the Throwing Axe. The screenshot says it receives a +2 THACO. Though, that might be part of the patch or upgrade if you reckon that it isn't there Six'.
Five axes, eh? Still, only one pair of hands to use them with - and only one NPC that you'd equip them with. I don't recall any other. Let me know if you're better informed. ------------------ Making running away an art form |

you're right lord brass, axes in bg1 give THAC0 bonuses. i had an old saved game with a fighter who had 4 stars proficient in axes, but anyway, i unequipped the axe +2, and gave him a regular axe, and yes there was a difference. so does this mean no one will create the Tweezers +1 with an item editor ??

Hmmm....I remember for sure that at least ONE of the +2 axes didn't state a THAC0, and I think the Battleaxe+1 at Feldepost's didn't either. Again, I'd like someone who is near the end of the game to provide reliable data on this, but I don't think they will (seeing as how I had to answer my own question about Edwin). I should have enough free time (ha!) to get those axes by the end of the week, and I'll know for sure.
Minsc starts out with one star in Axe. Kagain's the only truly axe-happy fellow, and I think Kagain's a loser. I'd thought about building a Fighter who loves his Axe, but decided against it because the Defender is so cool, and because you can't Backstab with an Axe. ------------------ You know what I always say? Correct Six', the Battle Axe +1 doesn't provide a THACO bonus according to the screenshot from GameBanshee. The only other one that doesn't is in Durlag's so don't worry about that (for a little while).
