My most advanced game has a ranger as the main character. It's been fun playing. I use the charm animal a good bit. It can be very useful. Just yesterday I had a Mountain Bear help me take out a couple of Ogre Berserkers. You have to remember though that animals will wander off if you don't move the group as a whole. And Often. When they move a certain distance from you they become hostile again. I think that some animals are more likely to stay with the ranger. Wolves, for example, may be more "loyal" than bears. This may not be the case, I may have just moved in such a way that they stayed nearby.
I don't use stealth much, I prefer to wear armor. Besides I have Imoen at 5th level wearing Boots of Stealth (probably not the correct name). She has a stealth % of 80 something. |

Ok, Thanks.
Another thing I was wondering was can the ranger tame mosters? Or is it just animals like bears, wolves dogs? And while these animals are tame, if they stay near the ranger will they turn red again or does that only happen when they wander to far away? I love my ranger, she is at 5th level right now but I don't feel I have used her abilities to her fullest. She hides in the shaddows and it has come in handy several times. I've also tamed bears to help in battles and that has been nice too. Perhaps if you'd like to share more on what your ranger does or has done I might think of more ways to utilizer mine. SilverLeaf |

The Charm may eventually wear off even if the ranger stays close by. I haven't had that happen but usually the creature ends up taking the brunt of the melee attacks so doesn't really last that long. I did feel bad about that, being a good ranger and all. But I found that if I didn't give them something to do they would wander away then come back and attack me.
I don't charm one then drag it around looking for a battle but definitey if one is handy when a fight somes up I'll use them. One situation I've run into a few times is a particular ambush between areas. There is a hostile Ogre mage with some minions and a very large, neutral bear. You can usually reach the bear before the bad guys see you. So there you can charm the bear and get a very strong ally in an ambush situation. My ranger is the main character so I find the heal light wound abilities you get at the end of the chapters a great plus. But you get those whatever your class is. I didn't realize that at first though. I'll probably begin to use stealth more now that I am beginning to acquire magical armor. Some studded leather +3 could come pretty close to Anhkeg. She's strong enough to carry around both, swapping them as the situations changed. Right now I'm only 4th level with the ranger but I am looking forward the the cleric spells that come at upper levels. A nice Entangle followed by a volley of +2 arrows, could just about win a fight alone. Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure the charm will work on anything that doesn't sucessfully make a Save v. Breath Weapon |
