You have to defeat a certain bad guy in the Windspear Hills.

No. You don't. Anomen does not need to go to the Windspear hills because he is NOT going to be a Paladin contrary to popular belief.

Anomen will have a family crises. Roleplay his alignment correctly, do the right thing, and he will eventually become Sir Anomen and will have some changes.

::hijacks the thread::

Why doesn't Anomen become a paladin? Is there a difference between knight of (deity/Radiant Heart) and paladin of (deity/Radiant Heart)?

Yes. First of all, paladins are the holiest of warriors, knights are kind of close but no cigar...also, they've got different functions. Paladins are warriors, while someone like Anomen, while he's big and carries a shield and a weapon, is also a cleric. A paladin like Keldorn doesn't.

While I have not actually experienced this, I have heard that if you actually start the Windspear Hills quest before Anomen is knighted then it must be finished before the Radiant Hart will knight him, otherwise they send him back to complete the quest. I always delay Windspear Hills until right before I head for Brynnlaw - by that time Anomen gets granted his knighthood as Butterfingers states above,

Anomen also does not have the prerequisite ability scores to become a Paladin.

Of course he does not have the prerequisite scores to dual class from a fighter to a Cleric either.

I just got back from the underdark, not having done the windspear hills quest and Anomen is most definately a knight in my party.

Minsc is a ranger with 6 INT and 8 WIS...wonder how he pulled that one off...

I think the game has clearly shown us that it will break its own rules to make good characters. (Is that an incentive for us to do the same? ) I'm just wondering why Anomen's just a knight when it looks like he has to go through the same trials and ordeals as a paladin like Keldorn. Is it because Anomen's just too, erm, angsty?

lol...true.

Anomen CAN fail his test if u refuse to rescue Garren's child, though.

Just extra tidbits of info here...

P.S. Hey, Mazzy's basically a trueswords - a Halfling Knight. BUT in BG2 Halflings can't be paladins, so Bioware decided to break the rules to make her LIKE a pally - just NOT official pally. Another example of rule broken.
