SPOILER!
I'm stuck at the second sub-level of the tower where you must solve the puzzles of the four Dwarven warders. 1. I have the mallet handle and mallet head but cannot get them repaired on the forge anvil. I cannot put them in a hand or any slot except inventory. I have tried putting them on the ground at the anvil. I have tried clicking the anvil many times and every key on the keyboard. My "Use Item" icon will not display anything so I cannot "Use" the mallet or the anvil that way? What must I do? 2. Similarly, I have the switch for the machine in inventory and have found where it should be used, but how do you "use" it? 3. I have also tried reading the books in every possible combination in the library but nothing happens with the "Pride" icon across the hall when I go to talk to it. I have read other postings here that said you simply read them in counterclockwise order from nearest the door to furtherest - no luck when I tried it. When I go back to talk to the warder for this sub-quest, no dialogue occurs. 4. I did manage to finish the glittering jewel quest but I took some other booty from the pile - did this spoil the other three quests? ------------------ Duguider |

I completed this bit last night and managed to blunder through by accident
![]() 1: You need the mallet head and handle on the same character. Now go to the room with the anvil and move your mouse cursor over it. click the left mouse button. You should now have the mallet. Go down to the gong room and click on it (the gong). At no time do you need to have these/this item in a hand or as a quick item. 2: Walk to the room with the big engine in it. Go up the stairs on to the raised walkway, turn right, and walk along to the end. On the wall that is opposite the double-door-entrance you will see a sort of hole. Make sure the switch is in your inventory, move your mouse cursor over this 'hole' and left click. 3: Move a character to the entrance to the room with the books in it. Starting from the left, read each book until you arrive back at the entrance. Some text should appear staying something (can't remember what). You should now be able to move directly across the passage way to the room with the sword in the stone. The sword will be ensconsed in bright light. 4: It shouldn't make any difference which order you do the quests, but you must talk to each Dwarf in a specific order. If you speak to a dwarf for which you haven't completed the quest, he should just repeat his riddle. If you've completed it, he will say so. If you have completed the riddle but you haven't asked the Dwarf next in line, he will tell you the riddle is complete, but to talk to one of his brothers. Hope this helps. ------------------ Hey! Thanks for trying to help gang - I had in fact tried all the things suggested but nothing was happening.
Soooo ... I trashed several evenings of gaming and started from a save game long before I got to Durlag's tower. Got to the tower and worked my way down to under story 2. This time I talked to ONE warder at a time and guess what ... the switch worked on the engine and I was able to make the wine. However, the warder won't take it - he tells me to complete the other quests first! FINE! So I stash the wine in the barrel and talk to the next dwarf who wants to be awakened - go get the mallet head and handle - forge anvil repairs them this time no problem, ring the gong, talk to the warder and that one is done. Next the glittering gem quest - done no problem. Now the snag - I talked to warder about pride, went to the library and read the four books in every order possible but nothing happens with the sword in the stone across the hall. Going back to talk to the warder doesn't work either. I even tried talking to the warder that wanted wine in case he was ready for it now but he still says to finish what his brothers tell me. SIGH .... Ideas, anyone? |

you know what? i had the exact same thing happen to me a while back when i was playing through Tales. i think this is a serious bug having to do with the order in which you do things, and as far as i know there is no way to remedy this problem once you've already gotten this far.
i'm playing through BG I again now after a while, and this whole discussion just reminded me to save like an anal bastard once i reach durlags again. the best advice i can give you (even though it may make you tear your hair out in frustration) is to re-load and earlier save and try doing all the tasks again. |
