no u cannot, as far as i know, which might not be very far, a ranger cannot backstab like a thief can. its useful for scouting i guess, but not the multiplied damage that a thief can achieve.

Which is NOT to say a Ranger's stealth isn't valuable. Scouting out enemies & shooting them from beyond their sight range is one of the most effective (and CHEAPEST!!!) tactics in the game. The weird thing is, it doesn't work on Jion Gallobchoir and his boys--it's weird because those guys are rather low-level, so they should be MORE vulnerable to that sort of thing than, say, Black Talon Elites.

They can in BgII(if you choose the stalker kit), but they are not as good at it as thieves.

In the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Core Rules only a Thief can backstab and, as far as I know, Baldur's Gate follows these rules. There are add-ons for the AD&D paper & pencil game for Rangers to backstab (Skills & Powers book), but BG doesn't employ these.

Your wrong dominion, in bgII stalkers CAN backstab. So i guess they dont follow all the rules.
