After some computer issues, my husband uninstalled and reinstalled Windows and everything else. I lost my game, and have started over. I decided to create a Wild Mage, since we hadn't had Throne of Bhaal when we first got it, so that wasn't an option.

So far, I'm very disappointed to have only seen two Wild Magic spells available to me. I was hoping for so much more.

Actually I think there are three such spells-levels 1,2,and 7. I think that the most interesting part is the chance for the wild mage to get a wild surge, which can cause some interesting things to happen. Also they are not restricted from any spell school, unlike a specialist wizard. Plus, the special chaos spells have chances to be shaped into anyother spell. So you could turn a first level spell into a high level spell.

There are actually 3 spells exclusive to the Wild Mage.

Narhal's Reckless Dweomer( NRD)
Chaos Shield
Improved Chaos Shield

The fun of playing a Wild Mage, comes from the Wild Surges. If you are impatient to wait for a Wild Surge, you can always cast NRD to force one to happen.

You ain't seen magic yet, till you have seen your very own Spider summons spitting out Melf's Minute Meteors.

Well... dropping cows come pretty close too.

I must admit, I've barely restarted my game, but I am enjoying the Wild Surges immensely. The only unfortunate one was when I managed to charm myself to an enemy, and I happened to be the only character with Dispel Magic memorized. Charm seems to take a while to wear off. I got to leave the game running, go upstairs and get a snack while I waited for things to go back to normal.

But yes, the Wild Surges seem quite worth it.

That's funny. I tried rolling a couple mage and sorcerer characters, and let the computer choose my starting spells for me, and some "pick for me" choices included NRD. And I don't have ToB installed.

Will NRD work in SoA?

That be odd, since NRD was not implemented until ToB is installed.

Miss Luthien, I wouldn't reccommend you play one unless you're prepared. Wild Magic is very fun when the game wants it to be because the results of it are completely unpredictable. The three spells only available to the Wild Mage have their causes such as...

Chaos Shield: Level: 2
Range: 0
Duration: 5 rounds + 10 rounds / 5 levels
Casting Time: 2
Area of Effect: caster
Saving Throw: None

Chaos Shield increases a wild mage's chance to gain a favorable result when a wild surge occurs. Every time a roll is made on the wild surge chart, an extra 15 is added to the dice roll. When Nahal's Reckless Dweomer is cast, the bonus from Chaos Shield stacks with the wild mage's level bonus.

Improved Chaos Shield: Level: 7
Range: 0
Duration: 2 turns
Casting Time: 7
Area of Effect: Caster
Saving Throw: None

Improved Chaos Shield increases a wild mage's chance to gain a favorable result when a wild surge occurs. Every time a roll is made on the wild surge chart, an extra 25 is added to the dice roll. When Nahal's Reckless Dweomer is cast, the bonus from Improved Chaos Shield stacks with the wild mage's level bonus.

Narhal's Reckless Dweomer: Level: 1
Range: Special
Duration: Special
Casting Time: 5
Area of Effect: Special
Saving Throw: Special

This spell is the wild mage's ultimate last-resort spell. When cast, the mage releases a sudden flood of wild magical energy in the hope of seizing and shaping that energy into a desired spell effect. The attempt usually fails, but something almost always occurs in the process.

To use Reckless Dweomer, simply cast it and then choose from your list of known spells. A burst of magical energy is released, which the wild mage tries to manipulate into the desired form. The actual effect of the spell is determined randomly by a dice roll on the Wild Surge Table (found in your manual).

Because the release of energy is planned by the mage, his level is added to the dice roll. If the result indicates success, the mage has shaped the magical energy into the desired effect. More often than not, the effect is completely unexpected. The result may be beneficial to the mage or it may be completely disastrous; this is the risk the mage takes in casting Nahal's reckless dweomer.

Wild surges for the Wild Mage class can happen even when NRD is not cast, but not as many times. The results can range from having your entire party healed from changing the sex of your opponent (really fun ).

Have Fun

The wild mage was hands down the most fun character I've played. I'd never use the chaos shields and used Reckless whenever I could (even if I just wanted a magic missle, another L1 spell). It was a total blast. Falling cows, area effect hiccups, accidental demon summons...oh man, it was hilarious. I had to reload a lot, but it was sooooo worth it. One time I got option 63 on the list (roll 4 more times for effects). I summoned a cow, birds, squirrels, and some "pretty sparkles", all of which were completely useless, but funny as hell. I generally play Neutral or Chaotic Neutral characters (this wild mage was CN), and this class fit perfectly.
