Greetings all,

I have decided to try and kill the nasty lich that holds my Staff of the Magi(Ok, soon to be mine). Well, my party make up is, myself a level 19 Mage, a custom Sorcerer level 14, custom Swashbuckler lvl 14, and Valygar level 16.

Why can I not do this? I do not have ToB, or the Tactics mod installed, and just have the difficulty on Normal. I think I might be misunderstanding some spell definitions or something, which is why I decided to post this.

So I walk through the entrance, and buff every spell I can before triggering the event inside the main room. On my main character, I put on Prot. from the elements, resist fire, stoneskin, blur, resist fear, spell turning, spell deflection, simulcrum(sp?) and do a contigency with 3 Magic missles. With my Sorcerer, I put up Spell Immunity -> Necromancy and Evocation, blur, and stoneskin.

I also summon 5 creatures, and Imp. Haste on Valygar and my Swashbuckler(who is GM with dual wield, and longswords, just don't have very good longswords yet )

So...I enter the fight, and just get creamed. As soon as both the mage and lich do Timestop, I'm dead. I have never survived past the Timestops. I've managed to kill the one instantly by positioning my guys perfectly and they just cut her down before any spells go off. But I've only managed to do that once.

The lich, or someone usually debuffs all my protections incredibly fast, and I cannot survive the fireballs they do, which always kills me (i messed up early in the game and lost my familiar somehow, so I only have 46hps at level 19)

What am I doing wrong? What spells am I forgetting? I do not have Time Stop yet, as I haven't done Spell Hold yet. Sorry for being long-winded, and thanks in adavance

Well, lets see... Today I just beaten the Twisted Rune with my solo L16 Invoker. What I did was, before the lich shows up and talk to u, I placed my mage in the liitle corner where u can only see the fighter and the vampire(the lich, mage, beholder cant see u). When the fight starts, I petrified and disginerated both the vampire and the fighter(requires luck to bypass their saving throws). After those 2 r dead, the rest is easy enough. First protect urself from evil, then summmon in 2 Fiends one by the Mage, the other by the Beholder and make sure u stay out of their sight. All the enemy spellcasters will waste most of their spells on those 2 Fiends(TimeStop, Gate, Meteor Swarm, Maze...etc) Once those 2 sacrifices r dead(they will be) Just use a scroll of prot from Magic and a potion of speed then go and pick the enemy of one by one with ur Sling of Everad+5.

With the tatics you're using, I'd suggest equipping all of your characters with Protection From Magic scrolls. The Twisted Rune will waste most, if not all of their good spells on you, allowing you to use your own to greater effect when the scrolls wear off. Also look out for when the female mage casts the gate spell, as she will not have casted protection from evil and the fiend will turn against her.

Also if you've gone through the shauagin (sp) city and got the cloak of mirroring, that will be extremely helpful - especially against the beholder.

Hope this helps!

Welcome to Ironworks, Ullrick! Note that these corrections are friendly in nature. Really.

That would be a really neat trick, since there are only two PfM scrolls in the entire game.

This depends on whether or not you've patched your game: In the unpatched version, the Mage carries an item that is supposed to grant Protection from Evil while in use. It does *not*. That's why either the BioWare patch or the BaldurDash Fixpack corrects the item, so that it actually *does* grant PfE.

Ahhh, Twisted Runies.....part of this complete breakfast.

Jamalez: Thank you, glad to be here

Jon Irenicus: Summoning in some evil demons sounds like a good plan, haven't tried that.

Ullrick: I went to all the magic shops and could not find any Prot. from Magic scrolls hehe.

SixOfSpades: Ya I have the Bioware and Baldurdash patches.

The annoying part about this fight is how much it kills my video card hehe. Especially when the fight first starts.

Ah well im a noob

I guess spells that protect against instant death would be quite beneficial, especially against that nasty lich.

It sounds like you are engaging in the worst of all possible tactics here, a frontal assault. To win your party needs to remain tucked deep inside the little entrance alcove far far away from the rest of twisted rune crew nasty crew.
Back up your party into the entrance area and have your swashbuckler set all his traps in the entrance way. Scoot your sorcerer along the southern wall of the entrancece chamber so she/he can see the area where the beholder will spawn but NOT far enough to trigger the initial event. Shoot off a web and a cloudkill. Repeat this on the north side you’re your mage tossing web and cloudkill towards where the assassin and vampire will appear will appear. No these will not kill the enemies it is just a delay tactic. Buff your swashbuckler and Valygar to the max and ONE of them out just far enough to trigger the table top dancer and as soon as the little runway light start have him back up so tabletop dancer is barely in sight, just enough to do the initial conversation and scoot him back even farther once that is done. Table top dancer will charge right into the traps and … dead dancer.
If you are lucky only the beholder and the assassin will come after you at this point as you are all (hopefully) out of range of vision of the vampire and the mage. Put the cloak of mirroring to good use on Valygar and get him to pound away at the beholder. I hope that you have Valygar is dual wielding celestial fury and either FoA and your swashbuckler using Daystar and or something like Flametounge +1. (What you don’t have Daystar? Well go get it!) Let Valygar deal with the beholder and the rest blast the assassin to bits. I suggest a lower resistance (preferably two followed by a chromatic orb or disintegrate) It is good to have a dispel illusion spell going at this point. Whenever the vampires shows up hit the sunray spell on Daystar and do it fast.
Check the read out has the Staff of the Magi holder been stupid enough to summon a demon. If so, all the better for you, stay in you corner and shut up, she was stupid enough to summon it without benefit of a protection from evil spell let her fight the thing. If not when the cloudkill dissipates send summoned creatures out towards the mage with the Staff of the Magi, she will waste her good spells on them, even her time stop.
Once the assassin and beholder are dead draw the vampire toward you and hit sunray. Very dead vampire.
The mage is pretty easy once her time stop is gone and hopefully somewhat battered form her encounter with the demon. Now you can charge and claim the staff for your own.
