My Enchanter knew that The Staff was needed.

And he knew how to get it.

The only problem was, actually getting it.

He had, one Ring of the Ram, pickpocked for him by a Gnome named Jan. He had a Rogue Stone, and he had one scroll of Protection from Magic. He had fourty +2 sling bullets. He also had a Wand of Cloudkill with exactly one charge. Would it be enough?

Zillifhar looked at the doorway in front of him. To the average eye, it seemed normal enough, but, it reeked of pure evil to a well trained mage. He pondered his options, carefully thinking, wondering if he was strong enough. He probably was not spell casting wise. But he did not plan to cast spells. Not one. This was going to be a battle of wits.

Zill found himself in what looked to be a large meeting hall, and, after a step or two inward, a lich appeared to greet him. He let loose with blast of Cloudkill and read his scroll. Suddenly, the whole welcoming commitee was out to say hello.

The deadly gas had it's effect. Screams and moans greeted his ears, a large Beholder tried in vain to do something to him. The lich had casted time stop, but, nothing special happened beyond that. The Beholder was nearing death. Fingering his ring, a blast errupted and blasted the bloated creature into the wall, killing him. He scooted over and grabbed the creature's eye stalk. Somebody, he was not sure who, had gated in a Pit Fiend. Now, they had another dangerous creature to worry about. The human fighter had fallen, and, the lich was starting to show his age. He pelted the human mage with his sling. She was already badly wounded. After a few shots, he had picked her off. Moving quickly, he went over and picked up her staff. It was The Staff. His sources had been correct, a powerful Staff of the Magi was in the city, and now, it was in his hands. After a few pokes and a little hand to hand combat, nothing in the room moved. Dead bodies littered the floor. Pleased with the damage he had done, he set about finding a way out.

"This went well." He thought to himself. "Now, I need to find out what this Kangaxx fellow is all about."

As he appeared on the street, several peasants eyed him, only to be more amazed as he vanished into thin air.

Truth be told, there are several fatal flaws in the way the Twisted Rune fight was designed, but considering that it is part of an incomplete quest, these flaws are forgivable.

The Improved version of this fight restores some respect into it, but the challenge remains relatively low if you know what you are doing.

No mention of the Vampire or the (inexplicably naked) Fighter? Were they taken out by the Pit Fiend?

Have any of the experts made any attempts to "fix" the game? I mean restoring the quests to the way they were planned, putting the links back in between quests and finishing the ones that are incomplete (Slavers, Twisted Rune, Cernd's baby, Jan and the Illithids all spring to mind, but there are more)

I know some of it's been done (Baldurdash etc) but how much more is possible?

I have to agree, I do not believe a simple cloudkill could take them down. Or did you just run the heck out of that place after you'd picked up the Beholder eye and the Staff of the Magi?

To be honest, I don't know what really killed what. All I know is, when I left, everything was dead.

Somebody managed to wing off a skull trap. I don't know if it was the mage or the lich. I was busy with the beholder at the time. All I know is for sure, the fighter lost moral from the skull trap because he went yellow circle right after. Then there was a sunfire. Somebody gated in a pit fiend, and, the pit fiend let loose with a big fire blast of his own. Not sure when he died, but, suddenly the fighter stopped chasing me. Down to lich, vampire, pit fiend, and mage. Mage fell easily enough to sling bullets. Then after I got the staff, I poked around with what ever was alive till it wasn't alive. The pit fiend excused himself and went back home.

Fight was on hard. I think I was around level 13 or 14 at the time. I had a staggering 50ish hit points with a familiar. (Bad rolls. Bad bad rolls.) My magic shield wore off right as I was putting the beholder eye in the flowerpot. Thinking about the whole mess actually, I think the Twisted Runies did more damage to the Twisted Runies then I did. Not sure who let loose with the skull trap or the sunfire, but, it did a lot of damage and actually helped me out. I have most of the auto pause options off. With the exception of being badly wounded or me hitting the space bar, game seldom pauses. I like my combat fast and furious, forcing me to think on my feet. The autopause options actually screw me up a bit.

I did not originally intend to kill but two of them. The beholder and the mage, and, then scoot out of there. The rest, well, the rest of it just sort of happened that way.
