So here I was, preparing to fight Irenicus on the Tree of Life. So I buffed 'em up, cast Mass Invisibility, and killed the last parasite. As expected my party was teleported to where Irenicus was standing.

After the dialogue was completed, instead of charging head on I simply walked away while Jon cast his numerous spells. By the time he finished, we were out of sight. I had Imoen and Aerie approach a careful stand-off distance from where he was stading, and started casting cloudkills and fireballs.

And that was it. The rest of the party stood around admiring the leaves and the birds while the cloudkills (about 3 or 4 clouds in total) did their stuff. Pretty soon Irenicus was done for.

Now, is this cheesy of what?

LOL, that's cheesy alright! I knew it works with Dragons, I had no idea it works on the first final boss as well.

Hmmmm....well I would call it "good strategy" myself...but that's just me.

Just because Irenicus is a "mage among mages" doesn't mean you have an obligation to stand there and take a pounding from him as he blasts you with spell after spell. I see nothing wrong with a "tactical retreat" when the situation warrants it.

Yes, but AI is too stupid to realize that he is taking damage. Abusing of stupid AI and bugs is cheesy.

Even cheesier is to gate in a pit fiend. When Jon falls to hell, the pit fiend will fall with him and kill him behind the wall. And he will do nothing but stand there and let himself get killed. When the wall finally opens, you will get a speach and then Jon will suddenly drop dead. Game ends, not much else happens

That's funny, I've been trying Cloudkills on Dragons and they ALWAYS run around and waste one or two of us before he even gets to Injured...

I kind of agree with Cerek - I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with running away, especially from a TimeStop + MeteorSwarm combo, of COURSE I'm going to RunAway! for a few rounds - I think it's really cheesy only when you already know what he's going to do and make a preemptive strike with that info, as if you were clairvoyant, which you CAN be, if you reload I just try to play it as if I didn't know what he was exactly going to do... after that I have no problem with trying Cloudkills; personally I never had much success with those anyway, he kept walking out of it toward a party member... IIRC I had a much easier time with Jon by summoning Skeleton Warriors and using ranged weapons...

In any case it's not the decisive battle, it's really more of a place for a plot twist

No, listen: your missing the cheese here. Running away from TS+MS is fine, but he stands in the fog of war and casts cloudkills at Irenicus. The cloudkill reaches him, but he is out of sight for Irenicus. Therefore Irenicus will just stand there like a goof and take damage. This happens because of inadequate AI. And like said, abusing AI = cheese.

Understood That's cool; since I've never killed him that way, I must be doing it non-dairy then
