Weird thing this, I was taking a new party through Chateau Irenicus again, and

Drum Roll .....big spoiler coming up!!!

...met a bunch of Goblins in the corridor (just outside the room with the jars)
After a long strategy think and saving the game as it looked like a very tough battle I finally decided .... ok fireball :- Goblin toast.

But the weird thing was what I found on their still smoking remains, which was a Short Bow +2!!

This has never happened to me before, as this was actually a really useful weapon, and I have never had this dropped by anyone, especially this early in the game before. I thought the drops were never random anyway.

Has anyone else actually picked up a usefull/rare item this early before?

I haven't found it myself, but I've heard of a guy who found an Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting-scroll as a random loot.

I found Simulacrum and in my rush to get the xp for writing it didn't wait for a potion. Oops, no more spell. Just to see what would happen, I reloaded and the goblin dropped an extra 7 gold.

Because of the amount of times I have done Chateau Irenicus I have picked up things like 'Protection from the Elements', 'Project Image', even 'Power Word, Kill' once!!!

The chance of getting anything other than 'Identify' is minimal, but still, minimal equals still possible!!!

Just for the record, save before you memorise an important spell. If it fails, reload! I've rigged 'L' for Quickload, so I Quicksave before and if it fails, hit L and I get the game back in a few seconds with the scroll!

Isn't that a bit pointless? If you intend to scribe the scrolls at all costs, just turn the difficlty to Normal, scribe the scroll, and set the difficulty back.
Just as 'cheesy', but saves time.

[/QUOTE]Saves time sure but does it not cost xp? IIRC on the normal setting you just get a % of available xp.

lower Exp on easy mode was the case in BG1 but I haven't seen it written for BG2. It might be the case though, I dunno... but I lower the difficulty to scribe spells and do them in batches. Annoying sometimes thought cause then you go back next time and realise you've forgotten to turn it back up.

ps. I think everyone has quickload on L... dunno why they don't just make it default
