starting off again (#7) but for the first time as a wizard although i will not be going solo at the start, i do want to make sure i have the best stats possible without cheats because i will be doing some side quests solo. A total role of 85 is reasonable so how would you spread the numbers out. Is charisma that important ? and wisdom? i guess intelligance should be 18

I look foreward to the suggestions
p.s is a wizard the same as a sorcerer?

Sorcerers don't need INT. It should only be considered as a role playing factor. CHA is also the least important for a sorcerer (you can always choose friends as a level 1 spell anyway).

To spread 85 points, I'd do the following:

STR 13
DEX 18
CON 16
INT 10
WIS 18
CHA 10

Nope, sorcerers pick spells when they level up, mages scribe them from scrolls. Sorcerers therefore have a more limited spell casting range, but get to cast as often as a specialist mage, but without the opposition school. If you can cast say 5 level 1 spells, and have chromatic orb/magic missile/identify/friends and spook as your chosen spells, you will be able to cast any combination of these, totalling 5 castings. e.g. you could cast 5 magic missiles, or 3 magic missiles and 2 identify spells etc. This is what makes sorcerers so very powerful provided you pick the right spells. INT is extremely important to mages, but has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on the max casting level/abilities of the sorcerer.

Wisdom becomes very useful when casting certain high level spells A good STR score is useful to carry some weight around. Dex should be 18 to maximise your crappy AC, and CON should be 16 to maximise your HP.

Build a sorc as a fighter, STR,DEX and CON are key. Except dont put CON above 16, as you are not actualy a fighter and it dosent ahve any further effect until CON=20, where you get minor regenerations.

INT is useless except against illithid, when you can use potions of genius and suchlike.

WIS effects saving throws and should be fairly high, but dont lose sleep over it.

CHA is as always only good for shopping, and as a solo you dont really care about gold after a bit, and when you do you still have a ring you can swap out conveniently for Human Influence.

Ring of Human Influence (from Circus) + Nymph Cloak (from Gorch in Mae'vars Guildhall) = 20 CHA. If your character can use swords, the Blade of Roses +3 from Bernard in the CC also adds +2 to CHA and is much less expensive (and more useful) than the Nymph Cloak.

This is useful for those who want to afford the Vecna's Robe at a fairly reasonable price.

Cheers,
-Sazerac

Both Mages and Sorcerers should have adequate Strength - Melf's Minute Meteors are surprisingly heavy.

Good luck. Playing a Wizard is a lot more interesting than playing a Fighter.
If you need some more help about spells, refer to the link in my Sig - the BG2 Spell Reference.

About Wisdom - since you are playing a Wizard, you can't (and won't) gain any Clerical spells. On the other hand, high Wisdom is useful for the Limited Wish spell (and Wish if you have ToB) - higher Wisdom will give you better options.

Which makes them *similar*, but not exactly the same.
