Unless you take the relevant NPCS, their quests and their rewards will not be avaialble to you. It may be possible to pickpocket part of the reward in certain cases, but you will not get XP or gold like that.

Other than that, a party of six self-generated characters will get everything you would get normally.

Having more self-created PC's is even more fun when you have various new kits/classes like the Lich class. "A Boy and his Lich"

I always create all six characters. I love handling all the details of character composition, creation and development. Unlike BG1, the NPCs are unbearable. If you look at the long haul, the experience you get from those quests doesn't make that much of a difference. That's with TOB included.

Most of the time i create 4 characters and take 2 NPCs. So i get the taste of both sides.

As far as the "XP wise" parties are concerned. You need not create the whole 6 members party. I daresay that the full custom party turns the game into a hack'n'slash massacre. You are too strong. Your six characters are created carefully and they fit your play style optimally. But if you create a smaller party (I like a party of three), the things will change. The "XP wise" party is your small party because the XPs are divided between less members of the party. Moreover, you need not lose most of quests. Use the method "hire a NPC, complete his quest and release him". You will lose only the long duration quests like Jaheira full quest (not only the curse) or the Edwin quest. Well, you need not lose these long duration quests, too - if you decide to keep the NPC in your party for enough long time.
