Am I trying to tackle Firkragg too soon? I went on the D'Arnise Hold and Trademeet stuff, Druid's Grove. I went to the Windspear Mtns and the plot line has me going into his dungeon. I was adequately getting through, until I ran into a room full of vampires, mummies. Even with an undead hunter in my group they leveled us hard. Too many confusions, not enough dispel magics.

This seems entirely too hard for the amount of experience I had racked up to this point. (I could probably defeat the room after picking the perfect spells and a night sleep, but looking at a few spoilers, I haven't even gotten to the dragon yet). Did I tackle this out of sequence? I can always back out and not return until I am more experience.

Out of the "meet the NPCs" Chapter 2 side quests, I always do windspear last. The very room you mention is, IMO, the hump. If you have trouble with it, you will be very frustrated the rest of the way through. True, you can get crafty, reload a lot, and rest a lot. But, why not venture elsewhere first. You got ToB? I would even do windspear after L1 Watchers.

I have hacked and cast my way though BG2 several times, and my pattern has always been to do D'arnise, then duid grove, then windspear hills. In my opinion you are right on schedule.

Easiest way to conquer the vamp room with a fighter type is to use a helm of charm protection (or better yet the shield of harmony you should have picked up in trademeet)and some negative plane protection ( as you have an undead hunter level drain will not be as big an issue for you)

Remember to use potions as well. That was always my biggest mistake as a newby. Even though potions were taking up all of my inventory slots, I kept forgetting to use them. (oil of speed + potion of frost giant strength is a good basic combo for melee)

Other good low level party tactics include:

-set some traps and lure your enemies over them
-Backstab
-summon skeletons and use cloudkill (won't work in this case, but a good tactic in many other situations.)

I have done this recently with an undead hunter. I believe the trick is to try luring out only one or two at a time then head for the room that you came from so you will have a little space to manuver. Send in a fire ball or two first into the room of undead to weaken them. Have one or two enemies follow you into the room and shut the door behind them (I didn't shut the door so I was dealing with several vampirs at once I used the shut the door method somewhere else so I think it should work here). Use your undead hunter to battle them in melee, and have mages use there spells. If fighting several undead use the turn undead of another cleric in your party as this helps. It is nice to have your mages learn hold undead as well when dealing with several vampires. It is nice but not necessary I didn't have it although I have it now. The charm person they use is annoying but have a few dispells available or have your undead hunter wear the helm. Your undead hunter is the man, he will take a beating but he is the man. You should be able to do this without losing any levels.

Shield of Harmony: given to you by the guildmistress when getting rid of the Dao Djinns
Helm of Charm Protection: various places; sold in the Lathander Temple, somewhere down in the Temple District Sewers, Harper Building (Galvarey's Estate)

u probably aint got enough experience (wot levels r ur chars?) but it might b worth tryin to get the daystar sword. its in the city gates district. go in the tavern, find a secret door. power up ur party with haste, chant bless and spells like that and run in. this lich is EXTREMELY powerful, i was lucky to kill it (i dont no wot i did tho thats the prob, i ran in was hackin him to pieces his pit fiend showed up and he was dead, i killed his pit fiend and took the sword.)
it makes mince meat of undead (vampires, skeletons, zombies mummies will all die almost instantly.)
YOU PROBABLY ALREADFY KNEW THIS THO SOOOOOO)
u can use spells like flame blade. that might help kill them. cast summon spells and use chant and stuff.
i had exactly the same troubles here. i still got 2 figure a way to kill firkraag, but i got other things on my mind like underdark at the mo.
hope this helps u.

You killed a Lich? I have killed Firkraag, he was actually not to hard but I still cannot kill the Lich without having 3 party members die before finishing him off. If you can handle the Lich I feel you are ready to take Firkraag.

If you have a cleric, cast the 3rd level spell Holy Smite. It rains down massive damage and can be cast in the middle of your party as it only affects evil alignments. THE most underrated spell out there. It being only 3rd level, you should be able to cast it multiple times. Happy smiting!

I went there early aswell and that was a tough room. I used summons to do the job but that wasnt enough so I had to do some battle. I handt memorized negative plane protection so I just ran into 4 or 5 vamps. After a while I finally managed to kill them, then I realised I could have owned everyo one of them with my clerics Turn Undead ability. DOH!
