Anybody using this antivirus program? I got a new computer a month ago, however without my permission the computer people installed Avira Antivir into my computer. I'm kinda wondering how good this antivirus program is compared to AVG, which I much prefer.
Been thinking of unistalling this Avira AntiVir and getting AVG instead. |

Searching around for reviews was rather promising. Appears to do a good job, and is designed to be a lightweight (as in small footprint on the PC) scanner.
Apparently the most annoying thing is its habit of prompting you to upgrade to the full version. That can be turned off, though... if you know where to look. Haven't tried it here, though, but I'd be interested in your results.

It's easily one of the best AV's on the market.

Yep, it's great and its free so I acctually don't mind the prompts... just ignore them.
I had the pro version for a while but didn't see much diffrence and to my horror it demanded I renewed the license after 6 months... for same amount I thought I had paid for it. So I jsut use the free version now. |

Previously the prompts will always minimize whatever program that I was currently running and it annoyed the hell out of me for example when I'm playing computer games.
However, I don't know what I did but the prompt is gone. I did read some reviews and looks like it can do the job when needed. I guess I'll hang with it for a while. |

Here's how lightweight it is with respect to system resources:
I doesn't noticeably bog down my Pentium III desktop with 384 MB of RAM. AVG Free? That thing was great back in the day, and is fine for a modern system, but for a laptop, or less than beefy system, or for a low RAM one, Avira is the way to go. The popup has never appeared while I've been on my computer...only while I've been away. All this said, be sure to dig through the advanced options when configuring it.
