Does anybody know how to do it? I've tried all the convential ways but nothing seems to work. Do I have to format the C drive if all else fails? Thanks for any suggestions

Why do you want to uninstall Win 98 ? Are you gonna go with ME or XP ? If that's the case just install it over Win 98, no problem. I,ve done that and it works just fine.

I want to install ME over it, but I tried doing that and it says my computer already has an operating system on it (Windows 98). So I'm assuming that I have to get rid of it if I want to have ME instead. But then again, I'm not a hundred percent sure

Oh hold on, it looks like it's working after all

EDIT: I take that back

It says 'Your computer already has an operating system installed that cannot be upgraded by this version of setup. You need to obtain the Windows Millennium upgrade'

*sigh*

Maybe a format is the best option then.

Sounds like good ole 'format c:' will do the trick. Two things - XP is better than ME which I havent heard a single good thing about *ever*, and check and recheck your backups. The check em all again, cos every single time someone does this they lose a vital save or something.

I woudnt advise an upgrade in any case - their reputedly less stable.

You might be able to skip the format by deltree c:/windows and del *.* in c:/ , but I woudnt recommend it - lots of crap will be left over and your HDD will be highly fragmented after the ME install.

Here is what you should do.

1. Make a Startup disk, make sure you can run the windows cd when you use it.
2. Start up the computer with the startup disk
3. Delete c:\Windows from the prompt "Deltree Windows"
4. Install Windows the one you want to use.
You will probably have to reinstall all your programs too but hey this is microsoft we are dealing with..

Why are you all against formatting ? i think its the best way to keep a computer clean. Just make partitions in your hd, 1 for windows and programs, another one for stuff you want to keep (game saves , files, installation files for irc, winzip and stuff, etc). I usually format every month or so, and i can say the performance of my pc is MUCH better when recently formatted.

Just my opinion
