Multiclass rules; help me clear something up please?

If i multi class an elf as 50/50 Ranger/Rogue do i get penalized XP?

The favoured class for an elf is a wizard, but as long as both classes are within a level of each other, ie: 4/5, 5/4 etc... then you won't be penalized.
