Cernd is a solid choice for an npc if you use him right. Granted he levels up quick in the begining, but after 12th level, have patience. Good spells for the first rnds of combat and then transform to wolfie to help clean up. Remember, in greater wolfie form, he gets a natuaral -8/9 ac, and with a ring or cloak of protection can easliy hit -10 ac, translated, he is a diffcult opponent to hit; not to mention he does good damage with his 3 attacks and natural resistences to most elements and magic. He gets my vote over doofy Dalis.
