I just started out with my wizard and I have heard that there are some things to upgrade weapons in the Academy. What and where are those things?

I've never found any. I don't think there are any secrets to the Academy, it's just a starter dungeon.

There are none in the Academy...and the magic blacksmith only forges weapons, which are sort of useless for a wizard...

I will assume you are referring to the Academy in Begger's Nest. I am wondering how you even get inside the Academy?! I have not been able to get either gate open. I check all the surrounding building for a secret passage and found none. I then saw the rampart ramps and thought Ah! You go up and then down the ramp inside the fence. Nope! That ramp is on the other side of a wall. So....how do you get inside?

You can't get back inside, after the Prelude. You can explore it thoroughly during the Prelude, but there's not a whole lot there to find.
