Other than taking forever it went well. I did have one major problem. I could connect to the net but I couldn't open any pages or functions. The problem turned out to be Nortons firewall. If you run into this remove the norton internet security program. You'll have a fire wall in XP. Just a heads up.

I would not just dump Norton IS. Just learn to configure it properly. Do not trust MSs firewall. MS tends to try to be everything to everybody. Therefore they tend to be very good at very little. There are some things that I don't mind M$ for - security is NOT one of them!
Please use a real firewall if you have a broadband connection, lest you become a zombie for h@X0rs!

You don't need firewall software, get a broadband router/switch combo with integrated firewall, free up them CPU cycles
Since I installed my LinkSys, I have had not a single hit on the computer side of the firewall (I kept norton running for months). |

I hear rumor of a Second Edition of XP to be released next year. Is this true? Can somebody link me to the info?
I am told that the information is on this website: www.computerworld.com...but I do not have the time to surf through the pages to find it. Any takers to the task? [ 11-20-2002, 03:15 PM: Message edited by: Larry_OHF ]

Broadband routers and hardware firewalls aren't just for those with bottomless wallets anymore. You can get a good little router for about $100 USD now. It depeneds on how much you want to spend as to how good the event logging will be, but there are decent models with good support.
One model you might look for is the Linksys BEFSX41. In a review I read the reviewer said it stopped every attack they threw at it and logged events better than some $1,000+ router/hardware firewall systems they'd tested. If you're interested in knowing a little more about it go to: www.linksys.com.sg
