Martin, Martin, and Martin. But, as I couldn't choose the same one thrice, I went with Martin, then Tolkien. Out of the other ones there that I've read, I'm not too fond of any of them. Salvatore is entertaining, but any FR novelist has trouble overcoming my dislike of the Monty Haul setting where you trip over magic artifacts every 5 steps. Eddings did fine in Pawn of Prophecy, but the Belgariad as a whole was mediocre, and the Mallorean was more of the same, with the Elenium and Talmuli also being quite similar -- in fact, he got famous by writing the same story 4 times.

Had Chaucer or Chretien de Troys or even the "unknown" Beowulf been on the list, I would have had a third vote. Oh well.

I concur w/ Night Stalker, but solely for Stackpole's Star Wars stuff. And yes, I am a junkie! Note to self: Must find that patch on e-bay...

I voted for Jordan only since we could only do three.
I would add Charles DeLint and Terry Pratchett.

I've read most of the authors cited before... And they're all good.
But I think Hobb, Martin and Jordan are the most 'mature'. Just take a look at characters from Tolkien, Eddings and the like : childish, and too naive.
My fav. is George R. Martin. I can't wait any longer for the 4th book (Song of Ice and Fire)
