Margret Weis and Tracy Hickman, are my favorite. Tolkien has a permanate place in sci-fi history of course. In the Dragonlance saga there is a trilogy called, "The Dwarvin Nations" trilogy, written by an author by the name of Dan Parkinson. Did a very good job in my opinion. I was quite surprised to find out he was mostly a western author!

Hi all!

First of all, Tolkien's LOTR and The Hobbit...

Second Robert Jordan's 'Wheel of Time'.

If I'm in mood for a good laugh, I read Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams ('Don't panic'!).

I am a fan of Philip José Farmer, who wasn't mentioned here before, I think (perhaps more SciFi). I don't know whats the name in english, perhaps "The riverworld" or something like that (it's about a world that consists of a big river ) Or his ?"The world of thousand levels/floors"? .

I don't remember the author but I liked the book 'Corum' a lot (Moorcook I think).

And last but not least Marion Zimmer Bradley (yeayea just giggle, I know she always writes about women but 'The Mists of Avalon' is a good book).

Thx for your attention.

I think I know what you're talking about. I believe it's called Riverworld. At least there's a movie they've been showing on Sci-Fi channel recently that goes by that name, with that same type of theme. IIRC it's supposed to be about a world where pretty much the whole thing is the Rive Styx or something.

That could be it.

Although I don't know about the film (which should be much worse than the book (a film can never be as good as a book)).

S'cos Tolkien wrote in 'epic' style in the tradition of myth and legend of yesterday - unreadable by today's standards? So's the Iliad, or the bloody Morte d'Arthur!
I would have to agree Tolkein is the greatest and we all know that...he established his own dang language which set the grounds for D&D. D&D also wanted to call 'halflings' 'hobbits' but TOlkains son made them change it which directly shows how great his influence has been on "modern fantasy", so to say. He also is deffinitly not unreadable by todays standards...he is selling more books now then he ever had in his life! He makes you belive that the world was once like this and that his stories are REAL by how in-depth he goes. He wrote the Simillaron as like a history book about elves! His imagination is incredable and he will never be 'unreadable', his elves and hobbits and orcs are what every writer today bases there books on, escpecially the 'wheel of time' series!
