While I don't disagree with most of your post, we are CERTAINLY not the only nation with the bomb.

We might have more bombs, but as Kennedy said, after hearing Kruschef(I know, I butchered the spelling) say the USSR had enough bombs to destroy the USA 50 times, "...we have enough to destroy your country once, and that is enough."

I realize, this is paraphrased, but it's as important today as it was 40 years ago.

"The Martyr" (excerpt)

There is sobbing of the strong,
And a pall upon the land;
But the People in their weeping
Bare the iron hand:
Beware the People weeping
When they bare the iron hand.

That is just exactly what any sensible person ANYWHERE wants, including the Afghans. Well said.

I realize this is a "flip" answer to a serious problem, but do you really believe that the US doing as you request is the real answer to the question?

The US working with the rest of the world on international concerns would be a great start - and would take us towards viable solutions, I believe. Isolationist policies in these matters which affect all of us are damaging in both the short and long term. The US is far too major a country to take the stance that it has been taking. All countries wish to protect their own interests. That is natural. However, the global problems that we currently face on all fronts, peace, security, environment, human rights, population and so on are so severe that I see no way to resolve any of these problems if we all continue to act in our own short term interests. Looking at the long term, it is probably in our best interests to work together for the peace, security and well being of all, because if we do not, the poor and disadvantaged of the world will eventually rise up against us, and neither they, nor we, will survive. Not in any kind of world that we would want to live in, that is.

The problem is that there are so many people around who are NOT sensible.

I'm not sure how truly great it is to boast that we can blow any country off the map.

No, we're not convincing anybody, Neb darling!! But never mind, it's been fun debating with these guys, and hopefully we've all learned something.... even if its only that Fljotsdale wears blue wellies with gold tassels. (They swing when she's mad.......)

Anyway, it's time for Cheetah to take a peek at GD, and go to bed. Thanks to all for the debate - I've enjoyed it muchly!!!!!

No. Of course not. Most people are polarised at the moment; and most Americans still seem to be living in fantasy-land regarding relations with the 'outside world'. I sometimes wonder if some of 'em actually believe the rest of us even exist.... SOME of them seem to see us as some fantasy epic being played for their entertainment - and when something flew in from out here, all they can think of is to smash the machine...
