In Northern Ireland, in the early 1990s, the IRA forced men to become suicide bombers by threatening their families. Wednesday 24 October 1990 'Proxy Bomb' Attacks
The Irish Republican Army (IRA) launched three bomb attacks at British Army check points. The attacks became know as 'proxy bombs' or 'human bombs' because three Catholic men, whom the IRA claimed had worked for the security forces, were tied into cars which had been loaded with explosives and ordered to drive to the check points. At the Coshquin checkpoint near Derry five soldiers and the man who was forced to drive the car were all killed. In a second attack, at Killeen near Newry, a soldier was killed. The third bomb, that had been driven to Omagh, County Tyrone, failed to detonate. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Suicide_bombing [ 12-11-2005, 07:52 PM: Message edited by: machinehead ] |

Regarding the subject of the 'bomber' being bipolar, does that really make any difference even after the fact? I'm not completely hip on bipolarism, but does it make one delusional to the point they might believe they have an 'imaginary' bomb?
My ex-wife (we were married for seven years and have been divorced for 11 glorious years) was diagnosed as being bipolar a couple of years ago. She actually has a severe case which results in an inability to even hold a job, so she receives a disability check from the government each month. Now my current wife thinks she is milking the system, but I firmly believe that if anyone deserves disability for being mentally ill - it IS my ex-wife. I'm being a bit flip in saying that, but I'm actually quite serious. Her diagnosis answers many questions for me. My point is, despite her being hard (even impossible)to get along with and being somewhat paranoid, she was never prone to fantasy (not even when it would have helped the marriage ![]() Now, I haven't been to this forum in quite a while, so if someone could go ahead and tear into me for this post, it would certainly make me feel like I'm home again. ![]() [ 12-14-2005, 09:09 PM: Message edited by: Ronn_Bman ]

Most Mentally ill people are no more dangerous than yelling and odd behavior are dangerous. Neither yelling nor odd behavior in and of itself is dangerous. My wife works with dozens of mentally ill people, ranging from Schitzophrenics to Bi-polars. For years she has not once felt endangered by any of them.
I doubt Mr. Alapazar had any delusions. I suspect that he had a manic fit, an episode of panic and fright triggered by fear of flying or something else. This is something medication can control. If he did indeed claim to have a bomb as some crewmember's and air marshalls claim, it was probably not planned behavior or a delusion, but a fight-or-flight reaction. From what I understand, Bi-Polars are the greatest threat to themselves. There is a high suicide rate amongst them (like 40%).The great emotional high/terrible low nature of the disease can make self-medication as difficult as giving up a great high. Quite challenging and they deserve whatever help they can get! Hi Ronn! [ 12-14-2005, 11:58 PM: Message edited by: Chewbacca ]

As for bipolar people, they are indeed a greater threat to themselves and others. In addition to that, it's unlikely that a bipolar person would bring a bomb with them like that. Episodes are fight or flight and extremely primal, as mentioned, and a bomb is a premeditated thing. Of course, his being bipolar wasn't brought up for consideration in the moment, so the point is moot.
