Ever Since Hitler i have not seen someone who can bring wrong ideas as being the right ideas as effectifly as him
His ideas i despice

He's a disgrase to the Islam and to Humanity
but i cannot help but to impressed by his manipulating powers

'tis true. england is nice because it's familiar. we know the rules (and regularly break them) it's not considered polite to discuss religion and politics - yet, everyone does all the time - and we all get cross and fall out and no-one minds because the next day we do it all again.

i would like to live in a variety of different countries, mainly italy because i like the climate and wonderful hypocricy of the catholics - they are fab! sin like a B****** all week and confess on sunday. makes me smile.

on a more serious note, the vast majority of brits are perfectly aware of the actions of our fore-parents in the world and most have no illusions as to our status in the here and now. i'm perfectly happy to be part of europe and though don't like some of the EU policies, prefer to think that a united europe is better than disunity and in-fighting, which is what we've had for the last goodness knows how many centuries.

i describe myself as european before british/english, because i admire europe and share a great many commonalities with her; history, blood, ideology etc.,

i like england but don't 'love' her. she's a progressive country, ever changing, but with pockets of old fasioned chocolate box lovliness contrasting with underprivilaged urban sprawl. i have been lucky enough to experience both. few institutions have remained intact, yet, there will probably always
be a veneer of tradition that non-brits will tend to latch on to.

the days of the raj are long gone - thankfully and i don't really think anyone thinks or yearns for them - i haven't met any, anyway.

Yeah - its one of the things I like best - being able to have a good row about things we violently disagree about, and shout each other down, but totally without animosity, and still staying friends! SO comfortable! And if someone is getting the worst of an argument, it is quite likely that one of his/her opponents will come in on his/her side to balance it out, lol!
Not saying ALL Brits are like that, but all the ones I know well or reasonably well are. I hate walking on eggshells!

Amen to that.

Yorick, if you really feel that we are clinging on to past glories then it's you that is living in the past. The people that I know have no doubt as to our position in whole scheme of things. You would have had a point 40 or 50 years ago but we don't use a pink map any more.

Similarly, I don't blame myself for the crimes commited by my ancestors. They lived in a different time when things were done differently. I can only concern myself and try to influence things that are happening today.

I'm not upset about anything that has been said about the brits on this board this weekend - I don't take your criticisms as 'brit bashing'. I like to think I can accept criticism. I'm also aware that you are trying to make a particular point here.

With regard to your points about flag waving and patriotism - I too would rather live here than anywhere else, I don't think that makes me a rabid patriot.

One last comment, and this is just information about how things go on here and not a comment on any other countries. The one time that you see flag waving and singing songs like Rule Brittania, Land of Hope and Glory etc., is at the 'Last Night of the Proms' a series of classical concerts held every year. Because our country is at war these songs were dropped this year because they were thought to be too jingoistic. Similary it was suggested that the words of Land of Hope and Glory be changed while we are at war.

'Wider still and wider' as the great Jim Royle would say 'My Arse!
