Minsc rocks, and thats that. DOn't care what you say, only in ToB is when he loses a bit of his shine, but that really doesn't matter.

As you say, he isn't as powerful in TOB, but that's just because, IMHO, TOB sux. I my reinstall BGII and play it agin, install Darkest Day instead. I hear it's better.

Hey, they've been part of my life for over a year. You get attached. I've read about how all the Victorians got upset when Little Nell dies(in Dickens' Old Cuiosity Shop?)I feel similarly.

okay, i dont mind you people saying that Minsc is useful, because he is that. he's a great tanks and ranger, but still...

HOW IN THE NINE HELLS CAN YOU POSSIBLY THINK HE'S FUNNY!?

he is a complete moron! ive heard him say 'Butt-kicking for goodness!" ever since BGI, and im sick and tired of it! and how he obsesses over that hamster... i want to kill that hamster so much! i thought he was funny in bg1, true, but ive gone through with him too many times, and now i want to slaughter him! i just leave him in his cell now, let him rot while trying to gnaw through the bars...

One thing that I have not read in 2 pages of posts on Minsc is a really good assessment of hit stats. His 18/whatever STR, 16 DEX, and 16 CON are great stats for the NPC's early in the game. No STR or DEX enhancement required!!! Unlike so many of the other NPC tanks or clerics. This is something that should not be overlooked.

2. Having skills in 2H sword and longbow stupid??? Huh??? What?? When I played an archer, I after I maxed out my PC's skill in longbow (i.e. during character creation) I I concentrated on giving the new profiency points to 2H weapons!!! I generally prefer to have my NPC tanks use shields in melee, so all those good 2H weapons were going unused. Furthermore, an archer should probably always keep his bow in one of this weapons slots (thus no shields). This makes 2H weapons perfect as secondary weapons for an archer. Longbow and 2H sword is a perfectly good combination!!!

Personally, I end up dumping Minsc about 1/2 the time. I like to have at least 3, sometimes 4 tanks. My PC is almost always a tank. I like "tankable" priests, i.e. Anomen or Jahiera or both. (Hey, I've played all the way thru with both. What a combination!!! Cleric and Druid spells combined with more than capable melee skills!!!) When I end up dumping Minsc, it's usually because he's not bring enough secondary skills to the party. I suppose it's because pure-class rangers don't do much for me. I like archers (played one) and stalkers (I like using Valygar). I'd rather have something more potent (i.e. a pure-class fighter like Mazzy) or more flexible (like Keldorn, Anomen, or Jahiera).

From a roleplaying perspective...

So what if Minsc isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, he is completely loyal to you. (At least, I know he is if you're a good character. Never played evil chars.) You don't like his dopey comments??? What do yo expect from a character that's been hit on the head a dozen times too often, like the bio said?

Of course, it might have made for an interesting subplot if somehow Minsc's brain damage were to be healed. I wonder what he was like "before"? Hmmm.... (What's this rat doing on my shoulder???)

thts what i mean. Of course I know he is great in SoA and BG1. Its just that his moronic dialogues drive me insane. Such as "Boo says, WHAT?", "Butt-kicking for goodness!!!!!!". His voice now grates on my nerves and i sumtimes felt like throwing the computer out of the window. He was funny but now he is just annoying and looks like a moron, if somewhat funny, IMO.

I think those of you who don't like the loveable and yet mentally challenged ranger all have one problem in mind. Now of you full grasp what this game is suppose to be played as. Sure you can bring together all the strongest characters of completely different alignments in this game and force them to play nice while you go through the game, but if this was in any way a real AD&D game then Viconia would have it out with Keldorn or Anomen from the start, Jaheria would demand you act completely true neutral MORE often then she already annoyingly does, Korgon and Aerie wouldn't play nice nearly as long as they do before she demands he leaves party, heck from a AD&D true role playing stand point MINSC is probably perfect the way he is. If he was not mentally challenged in any way guess what, 1/2 of you complaining about him would be complaining he is TO GOOD of a character because he is perfect and the other 1/2 would have no problems at all. I think to each person give them their own tastes in characters but if your going to pick people ONLY based on their usefulness in the game and not enjoy any of what the game offers in conversations, loyalty, and just all around amusement of dialog then your the one missing out. If you want to play evil and slay Minsc and Jah, FINE do it, be a chaotic evil character, kill them both, kill Imoen, make it out of there BY YOURSELF, kill Yoshimo, recruit the dwarf, recruit viconia, get edwin, and play a completely EVIL game. If you like Minsc alot I would bet you probably did the exact opposite. You probably kept Minsc, rescued everyone from the dungeon, maybe let go of Jah and Yoshimo, and in all likely hood had a party much similar to how I play with a Paladin. Me, Minsc, Aerie, Keldorn, Anomen, Mazzy. Minsc and Mazzy are good with bows and both able to jump in front line if needed, Anomen and Aerie make only real casters, Keldorn and I take the front line. Paladins side by side against evil. Entire party EXCEPT Minsc is Lawful good once Anomen has done his quest. With a party like that doing all the missions in the name of good I can have 20 rep inside of 1/2 day of game play never even left act 2. The funny thing is even though I assembled the party for having a totally 'good' party in the end it is a very strong team. Any time someone gets a bad effect on them Keldorn effortlessly fixes it with his dispell magic, Both my casters and even my own Paladin himself some times will cast Holy Smite over and over again, storm down the dmg easily just like that. I think the problem with most people making these mix matched teams is that the role playing part of this game is totally lost. In an honest way I pity anyone who doesn't enjoy that part of the game. I mean if you are simply going to assemble the strongest team to tank your way past everything in the game then just edit make a multiplayer game and give yourself a fully custom team, while your at it why don't you make yourself a level 50/50/50 fighter mage cleric and play the entire game alone. I mean this is suppose to be fun, 1/2 the fun for me is interacting with other people in multiplayer game OR if I playing single player then I guess I interact with the characters given to me. You don't like the hamster... 'edit it' and give him his slot back. Don't like the voices then turn down volume or just be a pain and cast silence on him and let the others talk. I mean seriously you want a insane party of insane power the just make it yourself. Why don't you make your own custom weapons while your at it. Reminds me of someone who edited his character to point he had 99 for all stats, had a weapon that was +65000 or something, i mean if he attacked you you died instantly. If you going to go on and on about how you dont like him then don't take him, make your own party, and edit away, cause once you take away the role playing part of this game the game loses 1/2 its fun anyway. You might as well go all the way and take away the balancing factors like level restriction, earning exp properly, and finding items yourself. Edit away, I'm sure 2 days from now you'll be bored, restarting the game, and playing like a good little boy/girl because you'll miss having no one to talk to. haha.

Ouch... my eyes hurt after reading that. Good post, though. I agree with the roleplaying part of the BG series since I think it is the strongest point of it. I like to play with an evil group, though.
