That's because in BG1, he's still a level 16 ranger fighting a group of low level characters. In BG2, he has a group of people with him, but you should also have strong characters too by the time you can meet him.

I dont think that Drizzt is the hardest character to beat in bg1. I would reserve that title for Shandalar!

Still think it's so hard because most people meet him on low levels... I think you could beat him if your party was lvl 8/7

well thats pretty obvious. I dont think a solo character could beat him if they were in the TotSC xp cap.

I also find it amazing that you get more experience for killing Drizzt than you do for killing Armoured Figure. You get 10,000 for killing armoured figure (you also get 9,800 fir killing his wizard mate) and you get 12,000 for killing Drizzt AND you get 16,000 I believe for killing Shandalar

BG2 is easy... cast inprisonment on him, kill his buddies, lay down a LOT LOT LOT of traps and get your spellcasters ready to shoot off a bunch of magic resistance and lower resistance, your tanks up by where he was imprisoned then cast freedom, he will go down in about twenty seconds, but all thegoodies i took from him got taken away by that goon friend of his anyways, oh well i got lots better weapons and armor anyways...

You've just gotta watch out during that second when you're within Scimitar range.

(Cheesy players will also know how to Backstab while wearing Full Plate, too.)
That was exactly how I beat him with my monk, except that I didn't use any Speed enhancing items and just relied on the normal speed boni of my monk.
But I don't think this is an AI exploit, it may be mean, but it is what it is: a tactic.
I'm not exploiting weak AI, I'm exploiting that I can run faster than Drizz't and that I can hide. And I think that it is justifiable for Drizzt to stay, as
1. He is mighty and I am not, so he'll just consider me a nuisance at first.
2. If he wants to flee I'm still faster than him and would follow him all the way until I finally kill him.
And it's not that easy anyway, because you often run out of places to flee and hide and suddenly stumble across a Dire Wolf or Worg while running away and then have to deal with them (they are as fast as you are) before Drizzt catches up)
