You will still get your x7 backstab modifier. As for the levels that you get x6 and x7 though, I am not entirely sure. Although I believe x7 is at 21, I might be wrong on this, but rest assured, your Assassin will still have the x7 backstab modifier eventually.

What drives me nuts is they added outside classes, like those mentioned, Monks, Barbarians, Sorcerers, but, they left out legitimate classes that they even mention in the game manual, like Half Elves being able to be Druid/Mages, a perfectly legit combo that has been around since pretty much the beginning.
Oh, and by the way, for those not in the know, the Fury Fisted Monk really was frightning. Think of a Monk on speed, with double attacks, the Berserker Rage ability, and life stealing fists. They started out with 5% of damage done returned as healing, gaining 1% per level. BTW, Before Barbarians were mentioned in their own handbook, there was the Unearthed Arcana. The UA was considered official cannon, as far as gaming goes, it also introduced the Cavalier. The UA was also the official rulebook that turned Drow into an officially playable race as well. As for Monks being a Cleric subkit, read my post more carefully. The first Monks were not Clerics at all, but Thieves, gaining d6 hit points, Thieves THAC0 and saves, and pretty much mirrored the Acrobat's skills. It took another printing or two before Monks became a Cleric subclass. |

Actually, I'm playing a Monk in PnP currently, (1st ed monk rules in a 2nd ed game), their HP's are 2d4 at 1st lvl and 1d4 every level after that (oriental adventures may have changed that, I only have 1st ed DMG, UA, and the players handbook) in their description it talks about them as a unique class, not a thief subclass, they recieve thiefly powers but have a few clerical traits as well (enough to prevent their being a purely lawful group of thieves) that throw enough confusion to make them fun. in the Greyhawk book The Scarlet Brotherhood they reintroduced 1st edition monks and assassins with some farely hefty rules overhauls making them fully 2nd ed compliant (chief among them being they were officially a priest class gaining priest HP and THAC0, and most of their deadlier powers offered saving throws)
{edit} I loved the cavalier, and their ability to improve their ability scores, I modified the system and applied it to all classes, as a DM I look at the two abilities you roleplayed best during the course of your level and have you roll 2d10, when the total reaches 100 you gain a point in the given stat.
