I don't know how much the ticket is. It doesn't say on the ticket.
I'm not planning on using a lawyer either. I've been to court for traffic infringements in Australia and won before now.

Do not waste money on a lawyer. Show up if it isn't too inconvenient, make your argument, and see if it works. The prosecutor may just drop the case. Ask the prosecutor what your options are -- they are the state's lawyers, not yours, but they will tell you what kind of resolution might be acceptable to them.

Sorry for being ignorant, but how do you pay your tickets then if you don't know how much to pay?

There may be a number to call to get what the fine is. They do that out here now, at least in some places. *whistles innocently*

When you go to court, be sure to bring the pictures. From the inside of your car is great... put the judge right there.

Be sure to take a couple more from farther away so that if there is a sign, you can show where it is and how hard it is to read.

I got hit for failure to stop at a stop sign. I stopped but there were trees blocking my view and had to creep out just to see anything. A cop came strolling up a hill and happened to pass me as I was coming out. Fought the ticket, recieved no points and just paid off the fine. I took pictures with my cell phone and was more than willing to use them should the matter go to court, but usually, at least here in the States, such things are handled out of court. I say give em the finger and fight it left and right.

Alright, well I went to court today. The copper was there. I argued my case in front of the judge. I got a $40 fine (plus the $50 surcharge).

I think that's good. I think it was meant to be $150 plus the $50 surcharge. I don't really know because there was no amount on the ticket. Closest thing I could find was the $150 fine for ignoring a red light.

Anyway it was kinda good natured, we all laughed at a different stage, but I'm still miffed. Not my fault they haven't signed the intersection well.

I could have appealed, but i figured I'd wasted enough time on it already.

So there you goes. Yorick vs City Hall #1.

Oh yeah, it wqas worth it seeing the look on the coppers face when he saw the right-side photo. He stammered... "well I... that's very clever... I don't know when this photo was taken but there was a sign there that day...." which then led into the ensuing discussion.
