How about these telemarketers that call you with a auto dialer, you pick up say hello 3 times before they start there line of crap.
How about drivers that drive 45 on the interstate, you think well whatever they are in the slow lane. Then you follow them off the ramp and they still drive 45 through the residential area(30 mph).Autopilot is thier god?

Thanks ever so much for introducing this topic.

I do gently tease my friends about their mistakes (or mitsakes, as Davros puts it... right, Davros?), so this is not meant to start a flame war, but you did ask. And while spelling and grammar may not seem like a big deal, the overall quality of written English by adults in the U.S.A. has become rather poor. If your nurse or doctor cannot spell the word calendar correctly (or the plural), would you expect them to have a better knowledge of math and be able to get your medications dosed out correctly? If the pilot of the plane you are riding in cannot write a grammatical sentence (which he should have mastered in grade school), do you really trust him with the complicated task of flying?

Don't you think the grammar thing is a tad harsh AliCat? I mean I spell well, but everyone makes mistakes sometimes. If you're positive you know how to spell a word do you go spell check it to be sure? (Okay I admit I have but that's not the point.) Most people don't. Cut us a little slack would you?

Redblueflare,
No, I don't think the "grammar thing" is a bit harsh at all. Many people in this country write well. Many of us also expect that by the time something is published, it will have been edited for spelling and grammar; in other words, it will have a professional appearance. Unfortunately, when something is published repeatedly with poor grammar or spelling, people have a tendency to assume that that is the correct way to do it, and modify their own communication accordingly. For instance, there's a real trend at least in spoken English to drop the "ly" suffix off of adverbs. No big deal, eh? With each such mistake, however, we gradually lose more and more of our command of our own language.

As much as I've been tempted, I've never emailed a person to tell them how poorly their online signature is written (along with the rest of their entries), although I did once (helpfully, I hope) let someone know that a biblical reference was misspelled. I will gladly admit there are two people who post on certain boards around here whose writing is so horrific I cannot read it, and these are, to my knowledge, writing in their native language. I will also admit that while primarily a computer game is a shambles if it's released before it is capable of performing properly, I also believe that it is unprofessional to release it with copious grammatical and spelling mistakes. I love Wizards & Warriors, but that has to be one of the most poorly worded games I've ever seen (one character describes a colanth's eye as being "mesermizing"). It's just unprofessional.

Oh, and I rarely use "spell check" programs. They're often wrong. Rely on a decent dictionary, instead.

By the way, your writing is generally well done, so no need to take any of this personally! But feel free to email me if you'd like to get into further conversation on this.

When people can't let an argument die out, but have to push their point despite the fact that they're not changing anyone's opinion. Let it go people!

When drivers don't use their turn signals to indicate their intent to turn. What, we're supposed to read your minds???

When a person 'dribbles' on the toilet seat and doesn't clean it up.

Meetings.

When I go to the effort of making a nice meal, and certain family members act like I set out to torture them because I expect them to eat it and not just heat up a frozen pizza cuz they don't feel like eating what I made. (and yes, I am so a good cook!)

How hard is it to wipe up the counter and wash out the sink while cleaning the kitchen? Isn't that a part of the task? Yet No One in my house does it except ME!

Okay (Not Ok.) I understand your point Alicat. It irritates me too when people mispell over and over and over. I'll take your advice and use a dictionary instead of spell check. The problem with that is how am I supposed to find the word, if I can't spell it?

I get your point! I've had that trouble at times, too. Like anything else in life, just do the best you can. Or make up a new word -- that way, no one can fault you on the spelling.
