That's because when hair is long, it's heavier so can't sustain the curls. I have found the same thing with my hair, which is annoyingly becoming more and more wavy as I get older.

One thing with ceramic straighteners, you need to get one that heats up to above 110 degrees celcius, otherwise you can't get a super-straight look. A lot only heat between 70 and 100 degrees.

But it doesn't always work, in my case I keep it shaved to less than 1/2 inch because if I don't it will curl up something fierce, think carrot top type afro with black hair on a white guy... yes that bad, and it won't straighten, keeping it shaved on the other hand provides a trendy look, and doesn't look unprofessional, unlike when my hair grows out and is completely unmanageable.

In that case you need a mild relaxer; just make sure to use a really good deep conditioner afterwards. Then you can use a straightening shampoo/conditioner with a flat ceramic iron. Aelia Jusa is correct--make sure it gets hot enough to do the job correctly.
