Hmm... there'll probably be another fantasy movie made at some point in time...
On the subject of Elminster, though, I'd have to agree with NebTron. El-boy is a munchkin... and Greenwood doesn't seem to be able to stand not having Elminster magically annihilate large groups of people excessively easily. I thought Elminster in Hell might not have been too bad, during the first portion of it... but then the ending was (at least in my opinion) utterly stupid and had nothing to do with the rest of the book... and the book itself could have been better, methinks... As for the D&D movie, I personally hated it... can't remember the exact problems any more, although they probably involved the fact that there were about two or so actual monsters I can remember in the thing (dragons and beholders), one of which did nothing... and the thief suddenly dicing up that funny warrior henchman guy after being beat up horribly by him a bit earlier... and why they decided not to try to resurrect the thief who fell off the building/cliff/whatever it was... and the fact that I found the characters to be somewhat highly uninteresting... and the movie seemed skip over large portions of stuff that should have been there... wow, lot of stuff. LOL Cerek I have to totally agree with your assessment of the D&D movie. The story was hohum, but the RP elements were pretty good.

LOL, I think that I'm just jealous, but Salvatore did a few other novelizations, including Star Wars, Episode II. This guy must get up a
t six and write all day. But, IMHO, if he had never come up with Drizzt, we would have never heard of him. ![]() |

I agree that he owes most of his success to the Icewind Dale Trilogy. It was his first effort in the Forgotten Realms, and he created so incredibly interesting characters. In fact, after reading The Crystal Shard, I was so impressed with his writing style that I sent him a letter (through TSR, of course). I was very honored to actually receive a letter back from Salvatore himself a couple of months later, and we corresponded with each other for about 1 1/2 years (I also wanted to be a fantasy novel writer). He actually suggested that I avoid becoming a writer unless I was totally committed because of the extreme amount of pressure to meet deadlines whether you have "writer's block" or not. He was every bit as personable in his letters as his characters were in his books. Alas, real life intervened with marriage and kids and I haven't much time to read novels anymore. Still, I place R.A. Salvatore in the same league as Tolkien. I like his books that much.
