I know, Sir Taliesin, I immediately thought of that too!! Maybe it would help if only really big or international charities like Médécins Sans Frontières (not sure I got all the accents right) could be chosen. Then there might still be disagreement about how such charities do their work, but not about the cause in itself (or at least I assume that most people don't have any problems with providing medical aid in third world countries!)

Not sure if it really matters if the organization is big or an international charities. Much depends on the current leadership of that organization. Look at the leadership of the WWF an organization I once respected and supported. I can respect it again once they get rid of the criminal at the top.

Look, the difference between individuals and BigImportantPeopleWithMoreImportantThingsToTakeCar eOfTM is they have staff to handle mundane aspects of daily life. A member of his staff made a clerical error, nothing more. This is not an intentional insult to Canadians. The item will eventually go into his Library anyway.

Try reading the article again without the Bush Done Bad Again slant. No where does it say that Bush did anything bad or derogitory towards Chretein or Canada. As Chewie said, this is trivial. And making a huge issue out of it is just petty.
I don't see at is a HUGE issue, but I do feel, at least for myself, it is a personal issue. The fact that a gifts worth is based upon dollar value, is an insult. I don't care if it's Joe Blow from next door, the President of the United States, or the Queen of England it is in bad taste to grade a gift based upon perceived dollar value.

Whether it's worth $20, $800, or $8 billion is irrelevant. I'm not sure if you're married or not, but if you are the next time your wife gives you a gift, estimate it's value at around $20 and file it in your sock drawer and see what happens. Just make sure you call 9-1-1 first.

The difference is that if the value is over (I believe) $20.00 American that the President of the United States of America can not own or use the item. If Bush has bad breath you can give him a tic-tac and he can use it. If his car needs an oil change you can't do it for free. Maybe the pen set was undervalued because Bush was so impressed with it that he wanted to use it and keep it near.

Yet, still Animal you are judging the man, GWB, for something he did not do!

By the article, it says ALL gifts to the Head of State during term get filed and archived. When his Presidential Library is build, it will be displayed there. Now that the proper value of the item has been established, and I'm not talking $ value, I am sure the oversight will eventually be corrected. But even if it's not ... so?

What reaction would you have prefered from the man? He never even saw the item. If it did get mentioned to him, it was misstated by an underling - most likely in the hall on the way to some other meeting.

If anything you may have a gripe with the nameless underling in the State Dept, but not GWB. He does do things worth critisizing, but this isn't one of them. Like I said, how petty.

To me it is a bloody collectors item, and Bush doesn't deserve anything more than $20 let alone an $800 pen set. As a tax payer I don't wish to be giving Bush expensive gifts with all the harm he has been causing in the way of trade.
Please go and re-read the rules to this forum, as we do NOT allow this type of crap post. cease this, or you will be suspended.
