I can argue against it. I can argue against any mage buff that affects caster only. Never (rarely) use them.

The only time I ever used MI is when soloing kensai->mage. Otherwise I never self-buff mages. They are always out of harms way and any self-bufs (while not completely useless) take up a valuable spell slot that could otherwise be taken by a damage/summoning/buff-other spell.

On a side notice, why does it suck in IWD? Is it any different?

While MI is a great spell, I wouldn't call it the best spell in the game for both BG1 and BG2. First of all, in BG2, timestop clearly takes a dump on mirror image, although MI is still useful. My mage usually quickly casts MI if I see an enemy casting an AoE spell.

MI might be the only thing that can save a mage from time stop

and since i usually only play with two or one person parties thats why i find it the most effective

in IWD if an attacker rolls the right amount (not sure how attack rolls work really but...) he can still do damage on you while the mirror image is still up

but in BG why it is so effective is because the attacker must kill every image of your (barring magic) untill he can do physical non magical damage on your mage

as far as protection spells go mirror image, stoneskin, fire resistance blue all together are deadly, unfortunately this woudl be the wrong forum to discuss thoose defenses

no... AFAIK it's not a question of rolling. AFAIK the attacker has an equal chance of hitting an image as he has of hitting the person. For example if 3 images are left there is a 25% chance of hitting the person (and 25% of hitting each image).

I was almost sure it worked same way in BG1. I could be mistaken though since as I said I dont use it much.

I thought it was liekt he in BG1 too, but i know for a fact that in Baldurs Gate to, he HAS to dispell all the images before he can hit the caster

At first in Baldurs 1 mirror immage used to not completely protect me, but now i havent gotten hit once when the spell was in effect (knock on wood)

FALSE

Mirror Image works the same way in both IWD and the BG Trilogy. As explained by ZFR, the chance to hit the real caster is 100% divided by the number of images plus one.

So if you have four images, the chance to hit the real caster is 20%.

Really? I explicitly remember my mage *never* getting hurt while his Mirror Image was in effect.

Note: This was in BG I

I suppose you got lucky then . Your mage was probably out of harm's way most of the time anyway, so that may be why.

No, it's true. The spell went though a change between BG1 and BG2: In BG1, as long as you have even one image remaining, you are immune to all damage. Even area-of-effect damage, which of course makes no sense at all. In BG2, each "hit" (physical or otherwise) is randomly directed either at the real you, or one of your images. So it's possible to have 7 images clustered around you and (if you're somehow insanely unlucky) have each of the incoming arrows hit the real you, leaving your decoys safe and sound. Try it for yourself: Cast MI and then Cloudkill on yourself. You're almost certain to choke on some poison gas before your MIs are all gone.
