Oh no, Quarterstaffs are most certainly usable for backstabs.

Ask Jim, he helped me create my dream screenshot.

The only one that is in question, is the Staff of Magi.

[EDIT:] Aaaaargh, beaten by less than a minute!
Ha! I got beaten in the BG1 Forum, but this is my turf! Just kidding. Anyway... Fighter/Thief/Mages can use the Mislead Exploit and Greater Whirlwind to REALLY ensure the target does not survive the backstab, or skip the GW and just go on a backstabbing spree for two minutes.

One of them is.

No, you can not backstab with the Staff of the Magi.
I was 99% sure about this, but i just tested it, in order to (hopefully) end the confusion once and for all.
The weapon is "unsuitable".
The reason for this is that in order to Backstab, you need a weapon useable by a single classed thief ((AB)Use Any Item aside, of course).
The SotM is NOT useable by thieves - but other Quarterstaves, such as the Staff of Striking or, *grin*, the Staff of Ram +6, are, so you can indeed backstab with them.

The Deathbringer Assault is a special, Sarevok-only feature.

With each successful hit, Sarevok has about 3% of doing additional 200 Piercing damage. You'll also see a big explosion effect on the target.

Here I am at long last! Alson's correct, SoTM cannot be used by single classed mages and therefore cannot be used to backwhack.

It's gotta be a weapon that can "stab," not "bonk."
Where I come from, bonk means something else. I'm getting a bit worried if a weapon is used for bonking .

Actually, the SotM can be used by single classed Mages.
Single classed thieves are a different story...

DOH!!! I meant single classed thieves!

It would be a fairly lame weapon if single classed mages couldn't use it!

I can see the description now:

"the quintessential mage item (not useable by mages)...."

What the hell happened to the "Backstab with only Short Sword and Dagger" rule????

Or did I just make that up?
