There are many words that have silent letters that you DON'T pronounce. But I cannot think of a single one in which you pronounce non-existant imaginary letters that are not there. Please name ONE.

Drizzt, would be pronounced with the sounds Dris-zit the I os formed by the Z interaction with the T. I mean, look at word's that are spelt diffrently be sound the same. See Vs Sea depending on how you look at it either an A is becoming an Eor the other way round.. So there are many exaples of letter's changing their sounds be assosiation...

Well, I suppose if you'd like to contradict the novels then that would work. But it DOES contradict the novels.

However, we're looking at this from the point of view on how characters hear Drizzt's name.
Why is it that so many characters, who aren't affiliated with Drizzt, hear his name as Drizzit in the book? All I'm saying is it doesn't add up. If Drizzt is really saying "Drisst", then how come the 8 non-important characters that say Drizzit are hearing his name that way? If it's his accent, then how does he correct people? Does he literally go through a whole grammar and pronunciation lesson just to do so?

Alright, check this out.
When you read a book, you have an image that you made up from the words that the author uses to describe to you how things should sort of look and feel. I am sure that we all have different perceptions of the very same book. That is part of the fun in reading a book. You get to decide what seems right to you and it is fantasy after all. The same goes for fantasy names. Sure the author may have his/her own way of pronouncing the name they created but that doesn't mean you have to say it the same way. R.A. Salvatore feels that very same way. He would rather people enjoy his stories and lose themselves in it then to try and pronounce some of these names he uses the correct way. I think it is just a matter of opinion. There is no wrong or right. If you imagine the name as being Driccet then so be it. If you would feel better with it being Drizat then great. Drizzt is a wonderful combination of oil meets water that actually sticks together. So say it however it feels right to you. Have fun all, ![]() Pystal

I've been reading this thread and just wanted to thank you all for the entertainment. I hope that, despite Pystal's very reasonable response, all of you will keep this thread going. This one is destined to be a classic.

Nice little academic debate here very worthy of the Ironworks forums.
![]() Now whilst I think everything's been fairly well covered and diplomatically concluded by Pystal in particular, there are a couple more little 'tid' bits I want to add. (A) In one of Drizzt's first PC RPG appearances, Menzoberranzen, the pronunciation "Drisst" is used (if my memory serves, hehe) This is the pronunciation I've always used since. (B) The quote from the guard in BG1, Candlekeep "I could take Drizz-it with one hand tied behind my back", has always been a cheesy joke for myself and D&D friends. It just sounds so very unscholarly, unsavoury and plain ignorant as many of his readers know just how formidable our friend Drizzt was to become with those dancing scimitars. But yes in the end, it is up to the individual to mentally pronounce words how they think they should. I've actually had more disagreements in my D&D circle with the pronunciation of Cattie-brie more so than Drizzt. ![]()

Hehe, Cattie-brie has to be one of the most argumentive names I can think of as well. I am always being corrected by my fellow gaming circle. On that note, I am an avid fan of R.A. Salvatores Forgotten Realms books. I have a few of his other novels but none of those seem to capture my imagination like his FR books do.
I wish they would continue to make these infinity engine games. I love them all. IWD and expansions, IWD2, BG1 and expansion, BG2 and Ex, Planscape Torment. etc. I would love to see a Planescape Torment sequel of sorts. I always loved pronouncing the famous hammer made by Brunor Battle Hammer. I can't spell it so feel free to do so. I think it goes something like this... Aegis Fang? Well, can someone give me a hand here lol. ![]() Have fun, Pystal

Unfortunately, they retired the Infinity Engine.
I'd love to have seen a massive multi-player online game using the Infinity engine. And as per the request, Aegis-Fang. I think of it as pronounced "Aygis-Fang", but sometimes it's "Ayjiss-Fang". [ 05-04-2004, 07:44 PM: Message edited by: Jerr Conner ]
