Nice job Rataxes. But I think that a Cleric should be easy with improved SoA boss. If he would be a C/R even easier but he could do pretty well. While we`re on the ToB subject my Blade is incredibly powerful. Only that Drow Spellcaster and then it is the Final Battle. (No WK)

Fourth part right here.
With the Planar Prison behind me, I wasn't really certain of what task I should undertake next. Investigating the Unseeing Eye, with it's plethora of Liches and Beholders, seemed a bit too difficult at the moment, as did Firkraag's lair, and I wouldn't dream of the D'Arnise Keep before I had a solid method of dealing acid/fire damage. Doing the Druid Grove to pick up the Blackblood Club then seemed like a natural choice, so off to Trademeet I was. Having been drained of most of my arsenal in an ambush on the way to Trademeet, I couldn't slay the animals quickly enough to save the soldier captain. Thus made my way directly to the high merchant. Had a bit of chat with Cernd and agreed to meet him by the grove. Once out in the wilderness I realized I didn't really have any anti-troll weapons to speak of. What I did recently acquire was the big gun, a 7th level slot with a Fire Storm memorized. Not wanting to waste it on a meager foe, I cast Sanctuary and snuck past the first small troll pack, summoned an Aerial Servant to dispose of the spiders, and then went on to the entrance of the troll nest. Protection from Evil Protection from Fire Draw Upon Holy Might Defensive Harmony Up with another Sanctuary and approached the troll nest guardians. A True Sight revealed a few Spirit Trolls among the Umber Hulks and Giant Trolls. Stood in the middle of the pack and began casting my Fire Storm. My -16 AC defense held and I finished the casting uninterrupted. 2 Holy Smites and 2 rounds of holy fire raining down on them was enough to down them all, they gave me a very nice lump of experience. Rested and repeated the process inside the nest, only I let an AS round them all up to the same spot. Back on the path to the Shadow Druid H.Q, I had memorized a few Flame Blades to deal with the stray trolls, a group of druids I encountered some time later was efficiently neutralized by a single casting of Silence. Finally ran into Cernd and let him temporarily join me to confront Faldorn together. Got my first real chance to stretch my own muscles with the HRDS combo just outside the H.Q entrance, the guards did not cause much trouble though. Cernd vs Faldorn was a pretty one-sided battle with Cernd's access to Greater Werewolf. And so order was restored. Visited the Djinni tent and terminated their illegal monopoly with a bit of HRDS magic before returning to the High merchant to report. Hero of Trademeet I was declared, well, whatever they say. It did have the advantage of allowing me to do business with the merchants of the town. Got rid of a ton of junk and bought the Belt of Inertial Barrier and Blackblood Club +3 in the same sweep. Finally, in replacing my +2 Warhammer with Blackblood, I at last got a solid acid weapon and so headed straight for D'Arnise Keep. Everything seemed calm enough on the outside upon arrival. Nalia was noticably concerned about the lateness of my coming, and didn't waste any time in showing me the secret entrance. Well inside the dusty keep, I failed to save the victim of the first troll I encountered, but did shortly afterwards succeed in avenging him. Found Daleson hiding out in the armory and told him, though nicely, to get lost. There was a large pack of nasty Trolls and Umber Hulks holed up in the (I assume) dining hall, and I decided to test the strength of my newly acquired Skeleton Warriors on them. Summoned up 5 of them and gave them all Prot from Evil and Defensive Harmony. They still managed to make utter failures out of themselves. Skellies may soak up spells like nothing else, but they are utter pansies when it comes to melee combat. Even when all five of them ganged up on a Spirit troll, they couldn't get him down past Injured, so I gave new orders and they at least managed to take an Umber Hulk with them when they perished. You want something done, you gonna have to do it yourself. So I placed Blackblood in the off-hand, fired up the HRDS combo, and went in there myself. Maybe I got a bit ahead of myself, had to retreat due to severe beatings at any rate. After some Resurrection Rod magic I went back in, less hot-headed and proceeded to take them out one by one in the doorway. Surprisingly enough, the rest of the ground level was largely empty on trolls. Ventured outside and was greeted by The Lesser Slime Cyclops (Otuygh) and four rabid dogs with cute names. Slew them and went upstairs to open the gate, killing a Spirit Troll on the way. Went back inside and up the stairs, took a nap. Once up on my feet again I chugged down an Oil of Speed and activated the HRDS + every other decent buff spell I had available. The objective was to clear the whole upper level before the Oil of Speed ran out. Thus ran clockwise and slaughtered every troll and other foe I encountered before moving on. With the aid of a pair of Aerial Servants I cleared the last half of the outer ring of the level and collected the 2nd flail head without the Seeking Sword. Arrived in golem hall with a few turns to spare, so I summoned a third Aerial Servant and fired up HRDS. The Iron Golem proved to be one of the most annoying foes I had encountered so far, because of damnable poison cloud he keeps summoning, the cloud nearly killed of all three of my servants by itself and forced me away from melee distance a few times. Now why is it that priests don't have access to a Protection from Poison spell? ![]() Anyhow, it was now time to proceed down into the basement, but not before a rest. Facing the trio of troll guardians in the first room in the basement in melee wasn't a problem with a bit of HRDS magic, the 6 Umber Hulks in the next room fell alright as well, though not before some intense usage of healing potions. So after yet another rest it was time for the final confrontation with the self-proclaimed king of the keep. TorGal and his merry men resided behind the door that was now in front of me. Knowing this troll to be one of the mightiest melee fighters in SoA, I conjured up my trio of trusty Aerial Servants and threw on every buff and potion I had on me. Potion of Power, Oil of Speed, Protection from Evil, Chaotic Commands, Aid, you name it. Activated a Sanctuary and went out to meet him. After a short and very much hostile exchange of words, he rushed after me as I retreated back into the other room. I had activated a True Sight earlier on so his shimmering was dispelled in a matter of seconds. Defensive Harmony on, now it was a simple matter of overthrowing him. So I engaged him, two hits and 135 HP poorer, I retreated to think over my tactic. I worked some of that Resurrection Rod magic and ran around till he decided to target my Aerial Servants instead, at which point I engaged him once again. Hitting him, and hitting him hard, wasn't a problem with the gazillion combat enhancers I had thrown on, but me and my alarmingly decreasing number of servants pounding on him for 3 rounds without even getting him to Badly Injured was a problem. By the time he had finished off all but one of my servants, he had used all of his healing potions and I was finally beginning to win some serious ground over his natural regeneration. He finally died more than half a turn of continuous pounding, right after he had brought the last of my servants to near death. The fight wasn't over though, His closest servants were still holed up in the other room - half a dozen Spirit trolls, a sort of Super Umber Hulk, and a few Yuan-ti mages. What to do? I was getting ready for some Fire Storm action and so fired up a Protection from Fire and another Sanctuary. Healed my servant best I could and sent him off into the room to gather all the trolls around him in a nice and tight cluster. Fire Storm away. 3 rounds of fire and 3 Holy Smites blasted the entire room clean. ![]() MWAHAHAHAHA. Destruction En Masse A La Cleric! That was that, with the entire keep clean I peacefully strolled through it to the smithy and assembled the flail, after which I said goodbye to Nalia and left for Athkatla. I've now reached level 18 and am beginning to get a resemblance of a final equipment setup. Part four ends here, will continue the report tomorrow. This is nice stuff. I might even use it as a guideline for if/when I solo a Cleric/Thief. Seriously, however, it's an interesting challenge. I wonder how you'll do with Imp Irenicus...

yes, and energy blades are a nice way to strip stoneskins when you get them--they're like Melf's Minute Meteors of meth-amphetamines

A cleric/thief shouldn't be hard once UAI happens--that'll go a long long way in making the character very melee viable.
and even beyond that, spike traps destroy rather completely. random question though--has anybody used Magic Stone as a kind of spell disruption tactic in a solo cleric game? I'm not sure how the mechanics work (gonna try it in a little bit) but one of the i'm finding to be harder to do is disrupting spells once in a timely manner. |
