Ugh, did you read the article? The idiot that caused the accident got 7 years and fined $20,000 for killing two people and horrible disfiguring Jacqui. He will be eligable for parole in 2005. That is a crime.

In 1988 I was in a motorcycle accident caused by someone that was just under the limit to be considered legally drunk. I was lucky and only had a torn ligamint in my right hand and a sturnum contussion. If I had not been wearing a helmet though it would have been much worse, as I did a header into the windshield.

What a terrible, terrible tragedy.

Lord Kathan - I agree that "before and after" pictures of Jacqui should be posted in every bar and tavern. I don't know if it would really make a difference, but maybe it would make at least some of the patrons consider what they are doing.

Larry - I also agree with you, my friend. I have a chronic illness which has caused me to live for up to 2 years at a time in constant pain. It has also come very close to killing me on more than one occasion. My trials have made me a stronger person....but I honostly don't know if I could survive something as horrible as this. My first thought when I saw the damage done to that beautiful girl was the same as yours - "I would pray for death". It is an amazing testimony and triumph of the spirit that Jacqui has been able to continue living after the accident. She is a far stronger person than I.

Lavindathar - Thank you so much for posting this. It has certainly reminded me to be more conscious of how I drive - and to always remember to be watching for the other person. I also wanted to say how glad I am that your own injuries weren't more serious after your own recent accident. I read your thread and saw the pictures - very scary stuff. As I said, I'm glad it wasn't more serious.

Well...
You actually made me cry. I don't even know what to say... I feel sadness and anger and just can't understand why people continue to drink and drive. I saw on a commercial recently that there is a device that can be put on cars that measures blood alcohol before it lets you drive. These really must be made mandatory additions to EVERY vehicle on the road.
Recently here in Montreal athere was an accident in which a family was wiped out, except for the baby in the car seat. The woman who caused the accident was barely hurt. I cannot comprehend what force in this universe allows innocents to die or suffer, while those responsible remain uninjured. More often than not, I hear stories of innocents being kileed and mutilated while the drunk driver might suffer a bruise or two, or perhaps a broken nose...
Why?

After seeing this, I know how lucky I am myself.

The police stated 1/10 get out alive of my crash with that damage, and I came out am nearly fully healed already.

The prison sentence is pointless IMPO. I believe if you let him walk, he would as he said in the artcile, teach people not to drink drive.

She forgave him, and that probably made his feelings worse. Knowing what he did toher, and that she forgave him.

Just my thoughts.

Thanks for bringing tears to my eyes guys, Geez! I can't even imagine the pain and horror that poor little girl has went through, and has to look forward to. Putting the guy in prison longer is pointless. Drunk driving is a crime of negligence, not maliciousness. I know it's small consolation to the victim and family. Another BIG problem I see here that nobody else seems to is the fact that the emergency vehicles were HIGHLY lacking in fire extinguishers! When I was in the military I used to gripe non-stop about the shoddy conditions of the fire extinguishers. The unit paid for it one night when a tent caught fire and half the extinguishers didn't work! Thank god no one burned. Just thousands of dollars worth of weapons and equipment! Did they learn? Nope! Fire extinguishers and maintenance cost a fair amount of money and time and nobody ever wants to pay it because they aren't used often enough! It PISSES ME OFF! I have three fire extinguishers in the house and one in the car. I'd have one in every room if I could! The emergency vehicles maintenance crew should be held accountable for not being adequately prepared! They had that many vehicles there and only ONE operational extinguisher! HOW SAD IS THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
