Yes, I've come across it when I was doing research on optical illusions. The whole thing about this being a test on whether you use your left/right brain is actually nonsense but it's still pretty neat nonetheless.

That's not a Yale University link. And it says that Yale exactly proved er... what?

Quote:
Even if it might not seem so, both directions can be seen. Apparently, this fact has been proved at the Yale University, USA, after 5 years of studying the human brain and its functions. Supposedly only 14% of the US population can see her spinning in both directions.
Yes I agree that some people see it clockwise and some antic-clockwise. And I can agree that 14% of population sees both.

But it never says that Yale proved that if you see this lady turning in clockwise you are using your right brain (and are random, intuitive...) and if you see it the other way, you are using left brain (and are logical, sequential).

In contrast to my deeply insightful, completely factitious interpretations of the left frontal crockus, the tabloid’s claims about “left brain” and “right brain” personality types are vastly overblown.

After a little practice, I can get the dancer to switch between clockwise and counter-clockwise spins - from either side of my visual field. This means both sides of my brain see both directions of spin just fine. This effect doesn’t have anything to do with differences in visual processing by the right and left sides of the brain.

Actually, the spinning dancer is an example of something called bistable perception. As an object that can be seen in either of two ways, it’s in the same class of illusion as the Necker cube and the face-vase.

So the notion that someone is "left-brained" or "right-brained" is absolute nonsense. All complex behaviours and cognitive functions require the integrated actions of multiple brain regions in both hemispheres of the brain. All types of information are probably processed in both the left and right hemispheres (perhaps in different ways, so that the processing carried out on one side of the brain complements, rather than substitutes, that being carried out on the other).
Like stated above, the spinning dancer is an example of something called bistable perception: an object that can be seen in either of two ways. But it absolutely doesn't mean if you see it one way you're left-hbrained and vice versa.
