I said it already Johnny. Is it just me or is this obvious. Anyone who tries to fight us is destroyed and anyone we go to fight gets destroyed. We kick ass in fighting.

We do not kick ass coming inbetween a conflict which goes back more generations than my appendages can afford other than the fact we can kick either and all side's ass in any and every battle.

But that was the whole point, wasn't it? Overthrowing Saddam's regime, and bring democracy to the people of Iraq? Well, that's a mission that's never going to be accomplished, some people don't even know what democracy is, let alone what to do with it. The US army kicked ass in the few days it took to defeat the already defeated army of Saddam, but that was just the first part of the game. The second part, pacifying the land, well...that's just not going to happen, not in a million years. The population already hates the US more than they ever hated Saddam, and that's a feat in itself, really.

The US army can kick any other country's ass in just a few days, but it doesn't stop there. If you want to succesfully end a conflict, it takes more than a few kicks in the ass. This whole Iraq story isn't going to have a happy ending for America, no matter how much i wish it would.

Some surges have been fairly succesful; I supposed it's there where the asses got kicked.

Too early to say anything about the whole thing.

I was young but I recall the tail end of Vietnam - or more accurately: the aftermath. I recall the feeling that we had lost was a lot stronger back then than it is now... so age would make most folks even MORE pessimistic about the Vietnam outcome not less so.

The fact that we were long gone when the North ultimately won doesn't change the fact that we bailed and 'our side' lost... despite the fact that we decisively won every single engagement of that war (even Tet... which most people seem to think we lost).

The point is that we can't accomplish what we want in Iraq with force... not even by brutally subjugating the populace and commiting a million troops could we do it. We might 'pacify' the population for a while... but the rebel fighters would simply fade into the population until the inevitable drawdown, and then the country would erupt in violence again.

I think history teaches that a country can win every major battle and still lose the war. Good ol' Pyrrhus was one of the first to figure that out. Still, the reasons he got kicked out of the Latin states aren't even remotely the same as the problems that democratic countries face when waging war abroad. The main issue is public opinion. The insurgents know that if enough bodybags get shown on American national television, the US will leave at one point or the other. They just have to keep their heads low until it happens. They knew in Vietnam as well. It is said that the only purpose of the Tet Offensive was to influence the American elections, which meant they sacrificed thousands of men to influence the American public opinion. The insurgents, on the other hand, do not have to get re-elected and have access to large numbers of fanatics who'd just love to throw themselves at impossible odds.
I've also been told that the Pentagon got rid of its 'nation building' department in the 90s. Apparently, they assumed that any future war would be fought against China. Now, I don't know to what this degree this information is correct, but a might explain a few things about the current state of Iraq and Afghanistan.

I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure that the US lost the Vietnam war. Otherwise, Vietnam would not be a communist country today, right?
